Cross posted in the Houston board:

Our kids are getting old enough, the wife and I are looking at putting a pool in the backyard so we all can enjoy. We have a really old oak tree that has been through a lot (we built a new house about 5 years ago, and the electric company is constantly trimming it back away from lines). As we're designing the pool, I'd like to have someone come look at the tree and talk to them about how close is too close to the tree for the roots. And recommendations are welcome. Note, we're in the Meyerland / Bellaire area. Thanks.

We used Bartlett Tree Experts for the trees in our neighborhood common areas. I had them trim up a 15 y/o water oak that had never been pruned. Very professional. It was about $500 which I thought was pricey but other folks have said it was fair for a bonded, reputable company.

Call Jeff Hanawalt over at Yellowstone-Arbor Division. He's been contract forester to city of Bellaire for 30+ years. He's in your area frequently and very knowledgeable. John or Peggy over at Bownds are great resources as well..Jeff has much more experience with tree preservation planning in desiphase of projects. He's SFA grad-don't hold that against him

Thanks for the rec. Have an Appt with Jeff set up for Sat AM. Seemed like a really nice and knowledgeable person, so I'm looking forward to what he has to say.

If you are doing an in-ground pool, and you think you might be too close...you are. Plus all the drippings from the tree...leaves, blooms, seeds, bugs....will wreck havoc on your cleaning system, filter system and chemical balance in the water. Not to mention the construction to do the pool.

edit to add: Generally if you get into the drip edge (the outer edge of the canopy) you will kill the tree.
