I'm thinking semi-auto for dove and over/under for quail. But what if you could just choose one or the other?

I have a 12 gauge and a 20 gauge semi-auto. Kind of become obsessed with the idea of an over/under.

If I could only have one shotgun for all purposes (waterfowl, upland, clays, small game, big game, defense, etc) it would be a semi auto.

If we are only talking clays and upland birds it would be an over under

It's been talked about a ton on here, but a semi 20 for both dove and quail is my preference. For quail, that 3rd, 4th, and 5th shot has come in handy pretty often on a slow rising covey.

Still, nothing beats getting a double with a nice O/U or SxS.

All I ever do with a shotgun is upland birds and clays so I'm happy with a O/U as well.

Agree with you that a semi would be a better "do everything" gun.

Why stop at 2, you need at least one of each kind of action! I've got:

Dove - Remington 870 wingmaster - pump
Duck - Benelli SBE II - Semi Auto
Clays/if I ever were to go upland bird hunting - Ruger Red Label - O/U

But if only one, the semi auto for the versatility of being able to use it in more situations.

I have:

Remington semi-auto 12 gauge
Benelli sem-auto 20 gauge

Not sure why I NEED and O/U.....but I want one.

I have two O/U one in 12ga and one 20ga, these are for dove hunting and sporting clays. I also have a 12ga SBE II that I use for waterfowl or if I think it will rain while hunting. I also have a Remington 1100 12ga that was my first shotgun, it is on my list of projects. I really want to do a complete rebuild on it and try to find some nice wood furniture for it as well. I also have a 870 for home defense....

O/U - nice weather upland hunting and clays
Semi - bad weather and waterfowl

I have multiple shotguns in both semi auto and o/u. I prefer the o/u for dove and quail because I have to pick up my shells casings. The semi automatic just throws shells everywhere and makes it a pia. This is fine if you in the marsh in a blind.

Just my opinion

If God wanted you to shoot an O/U he would have put your eyes that way.

My preference is
1. SxS
2. O/U
3. Pump (Winchester model 12 only)
4. Single Shot

Don't even keep a semi auto in the safe.

I have always wanted to pick up a Winchester Model 1887 . It would be cool to add a lever action to the list.

I use a O/U Browning Citori 12 gauge for dove and quail. Sometimes I substitute my old 20 gauge SxS Browning BPS. For ducks I use a Benelli Super Nova pump.

My Benelli SuperSport has quickly become my favorite Shotgun. I'd probably recommend a Cordoba though for a dual purpose because of the stock

Depends on how much you hunt or shoot and how much recoil bothers you. I shoot a lot of clays and use to think I had to have a O/U to fit in and look the part. After having a shoulder beat up every week end I had a guy let me use his Browning Gold Golden Clays to shoot a round of clays and five stand. I shot 300 rounds that week end and shoulder was ok for a change.
So I sold all my O/U's for clay shooting and went all semi auto.
I kept one Winchester 101 as it was my dad's and hated to get rid of it. I use it sometimes just to remember him when hunting quail.
Another benefit is my wife started shooting clays with me and she would not shoot any of my O/U's as she was very recoil sensitive. Now she is ok with me buying new semi auto shotguns whenever I want because she likes it too.

3rd, 4th, and 5th shot? Do you not have to use a plug when quail hunting?

For me it's over under for clays and upland game birds. I'll use my 870 for everything else. Only shot a semi a few times and it was nice but just not my thing. I'm going goose hunting this winter with the 870 so i might change my mind after that.

Nope. Only have to for migratory birds.

Auto always, or until we can buy full auto over the counter.

I've used both for upland birds and sold my 20 ga O/U. I used to think that any self respecting gentleman would only use an O/U, but I much prefer the reduced recoil of a semi-auto; and I suck so its nice to have that extra shot.

I prefer my O/U. Cheaper to shoot and do not have to search for casings. I wish I had bought one for my son instead of the semi-auto for the same reasons.

SxS. All others have no soul

SxS, O/U, SA - in that order is my preference for dove hunting.

If its going to be rainy or there is a chance of rain, I take my "Hammer with a barrel" (Benelli Supernova). It is quite literally the epitome of a user grade working tool and nothing more. LOL.
