is there any benefit to the full picatinny rail compared to the leupold style 2 peice bases?

im shooting a 7mag and have the leupold 2 peice basses on now but im updating my old sendero.

more than likely would never shoot past 400 yards so i dont need any cant

I recently made this switch on my Sendero and I really like it.

For me, the driving factor was that I needed my scope further back and the rail gave me much more adjustment. I also believe the stability is better since your bases have a much better contact surface. The other setup always seemed a bit delicate to me. Also, the single mounting surface would appear to alleviate any alignment issues that could develop.

In theory, it is a much better system but in practice it may not make much difference for you. If you happen to need the adjustment flexibility, like me, then it is a no-brainer.

YMMV

you using a steel or aluminum base?

Ring spacing issues are the main reason. I've always gone two piece to have more clearance when loading, etc. but I like the flexibility of mounting.

I just installed a magpul detachable mag

and it was a booger and i almost rage quit

The main reason is that rings that do not share a common base are more likely to need to be lapped for alignment.

Lapping is usually unnecessary for common base or one piece mounts, but the likelihood of misalignment is higher with leupold style rings

If you decide to go though with the separate rings, take it to a gunsmith for alignment/lapping to avoid scope tube damage

I really like DNZ mounts for the money.

did you install the dbm along with a magpul stock, or retrofit it to another stock?

I like bedded and lapped talley lightweights, with the action bedded to stock. Seems a rail could add rigidity if your rifle needed it, but a properly bedded stock should add any rigidity that your action is lacking, as well as eliminating tension that could result from poor stock/action fitment. If you go with a rail you really should bed it to avoid introducing stress when you torque it down on an uneven receiver surface

i am using the HS precision stock that came on the gun.

this what most closely resembles what i have, it is descries as a full length aluminum block but i can only see metal where the receiver meets at

That is a project i personally would not attempt without a mill. Good for you!

I lap every scope mounting I do. One piece or not. I mounted a S&B scope with a solid one piece mount and did not lap it and messed up a $3500 scope. Decided for the effort never again. You can get a scope lapping kit from Brownells or Midway USA made by Wheeler and it is pretty simple.
I just had five of my prairie dog rifles taken in for barrel threading for suppressors. I had to take all the scopes and mounts off. Not one showed a mount ring or any evidence the scopes had ever been mounted. I lapped everyone when I mounted them.

I just think for the effort it is the safe thing to do.....

Another common mistake when mounting is over torquing the scope ring screws. If you are going to do it yourself I suggest a quality torque wrench.

Fishin.........You can get a solid one piece long action mount from Leupold or Burris I believe and use either double dovetail or dovetail front and beveled windage adjust rear, depending on which mount you choose.

I use these mounts when trying to stay with the "traditional look" of a vintage bolt gun. Usually with wood stocks etc.
If mounting a scope on a modern tactical looking bolt gun with synthetic stocks, etc. I use the rail type mounting.

My prairie dog rifles and most of my hunting rifles are older Remington 700 BDL's, Winchester Model 70's and Older Sako's. I just dont want the look of a rail on those rifles.

I use what I think looks best for that particular rifle....albeit, I always use one piece base mounts.

the factory screw ended up being to short. my choice was to either find a longer screw or shave down some material. Well, i could by a screw from midway but those are $6+shipping.

well i had a friend send me some he had and they seemed to fit the bill. but they still didnt fit so i thought how i could make it work.

i put the screw in my cordless drill and turned down the edge of the screw with a dremel to fit in the hole.

the shoulder was also to big so i turned that down the same way.

and here it is. i may end up getting a screw when i place my midway order but i just wanted to see if i could make it work.

So you used the Magpul magwell assembly (that's intended to be a drop-in only into the Magpul Hunter stock), and stuck it in an HS precision stock that has regular BDL inletting, and it worked? That's probably why the screw was too short. But I'm amazed that it worked! Everything I've read has said it doesn't, which is why I put the magpul hunter stock on one of my 700s when I'd have preferred a B&C or H-S.
Looks great by the way! Will look even better with Talley Lightweights

i had to do a little dremeling to get it to fit. i used a small sand paper tube to widen up the recesses where the magwell sits as well as had to remove some of the inside from a sharp corners to more rounded.

i figured if i ruined the HS stock then i could get a magpul hunter 700 and if it works then ill blow my $200 midway gift card on rings, basses, a sling, some grovetec QD cups (to install in the HS stock), and magpul QD studs.

the FIL has a drill press and im going to put 2 QD's on the off bolt side and 3 underneath. 2 will be for the sling and he 3 will be for a bipod the attaches to a QD sling stud.

the 4 sling QD's will be non rotating bases and the one for a bipod will be free turning
