What's the preferred brand/model these days? Mine just went kaput after about 10 years.

If you are looking to replace the entire feeder I would go All Seasons Stand and Fill. If looking to just replace the thrower/timer on an existing barrel feeder, I'd go with Monarch.

Log...Let me preface my thoughts with some info. In the last 26 years, on our ranch, I have used just about every feeder made. Honestly, I have used Sweeny, Lamco, All Seasons, Texas Wildlife Supply, Atascosa Feeders, Texas Hunter and brands I cant remember. Only the small Sweeny's (350lb. Spin Cast) and the Texas Wildlife Supply units have held up to our constant use. We use our feeders 24/7 and they NEVER are not feeding. We use a lot of them (15-18) so they are quite an investment in our eyes.
I purchased $12,000 worth of All Seasons Feeders only to have all of them leak, corrode and rust, and within two years they were not usable. The owner (at least I was told that) basically blew me off after his attempted fix to silicone them for leaks did not work.
About two years ago we purchased about the same dollar amount from Texas Wildlife Supply. Using their 2,000 lb models. We had some leaking issues again but they replaced ALL of the feeders at no charge and now we have had no issues at all with them. They are built hell for stout and have good quality paint jobs and are made for long use. They are really good people and are ranch owners in Brady, Texas. I can highly recommend them.
Most feeder companies we dealt with build a feeder that is to be thrown away after a year or two and used strictly by the casual deer hunter on a lease that feeds for only a few months a year. We found that was not the case with Texas Wildlife Supply's units or the small Sweeny's.
I am sure you will get one hundred opinions replied to you but our money has been best spent with Texas Wildife Supply's feeders.

I'd look at the All Seasons Stand and Fill feeder if I was replacing a feeder. I had 27 corn feeders on my place and they were a hodgepodge of brands and types when I bought it. Over time I've replaced nearly all the crank up units and any of the others that broke with All Season stand and fills and have been very happy. So far I have 15 All Season feeders and have had 0 problems with structural integrity or leaks. An added bonus is you can chose to use them without a pen if you prefer because in my experience they've been hog proof thus far.

I use Ultramatic winch up feeders. They've worked well. Not cheap but good stuff.

HB stand and fill. Have two and zero complaints. I like the design better as well.

For just the control unit, The Timer seems very popular. I've heard lots of reviews and plan on buying one the next time I need a replacement.

We do not use our feeders for corn. Used for protein pellets which are much more susceptible to moisture and corrosion and rust.

All of my new protein feeders are Crossfire and the originals are all welded black iron of various brands. Regardless, moisture inside the feeder that causes the pellet to swell is most commonly due to condensation buildup within the feeder from the moisture in the air and in the feed and the temperature difference inside vs outside. Poor hopper/baffle design and feed with higher moisture content exacerbates this problem in feeders with poor airflow. Driving rain and leaks in a feeder also contribute to moisture inside a feeder, but the majority of time it's condensation. I've been wildlife and livestock nutrition consultant for over 20 years and seen this issue all over the US.

I like to build mine out of ammo cans.

That way you can make them what you want and what you need. Spend as much or as little as you want.

As far as the other parts like the barrel etc, you can do that to. Build what you want and put your own style on it. I enjoy it. Rig lights up for hogs if you want and run off the same battery etc.

I respect your qualifications. I have a similar background as WFS from TAMU and biologist for various ranches for the last 40 years and my own place for 26 and have lots of experience with feeding protein pellets. I have worked with three protein manufacturers to formulate protein that has low moisture content but will still hold the pellet shape without falling apart when augured for delivery. This was a result of me receiving pellets that were hot in temperature straight from the mill and had extremely high moisture content as well.
My experience has always been in south Texas, the Hill Country, and West Texas.....areas that are typically low humidity. Other than pellets being delivered from the supplier with high heat and moisture content I have not experienced condensation or swelling of pellets except from leaking weld seams, leaking fill doors, leaks around sight glass, leaks where legs attach etc. These are the issues that I had with other brands of feeders throughout the years. If a feeder is designed and built correctly it will not leak from a driving rain. The feeders I have now do not leak anywhere.....even in a very hard rain...... and with the feed supplier I use I have no condensation inside the hoppers/no swelling of pellets etc.

The OP asked for input on a good feeder brand. I tried, from my own experiences, to give an opinion.

This. HB. Can fill from bed of your truck. No coons can get in. Throw hard and far. Had great luck with them. Not cheap though

Perhaps. According to most on TexAgs I would be considered and "old" My days at TAM were with Dr. Inglis, Arnold and Teer.
