Kentucky Longrifle build thread

My next project is to build a muzzleloader. I've settled on the caplock .50 Kentucky longrifle. Since I'm going to be running Appalachian ridges after whitetail, it just seems the natural choice, although I love the look of the Hawkens, as well.

These builds seem like they'll be a piece of cake for anyone with a modicum of mechanical/woodworking skill.

Any pointers from people that have done this?

Just take your time and enjoy it. My grandfather and I built a CVA Kentucky pistol several years back. It was great. Lots of sanding and fitting but really not difficult. That Kentucky Rifle should be fun.

Take pics along the way and be sure to share the final project.

I will update this thread. I'm gathering materials as we speak. I've added a couple xacto carving knives and some bits and pieces for my dremel this week. Probably buy the rifle kit next week.

Sportsman's Warehouse down the street has a kit.

Is this going to be one of those scary "ghost" guns that you buy without a background check and has no serial number?!

Built one with me Dad when I younger. Lots of fun and not that difficult if you just take it slow and test fit. Really fun to shoot after you build it.

My only advice is to stick to real black powder and avoid pyrodex and similar substitutes. I like the swiss brand.

That looks awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress.

I'm torn on something like that. It would be cool as hell and a great accomplishment to take game with something I built. Especially if it's beautiful and historic.

The problem is I know I'd never hunt with something like that because I'd be too affraid to mess up something I put that much time and effort into. And that would just defeat the purpose.

It won't be a true Kentucky long rifle if you use a dremel. Chisels and files only.

I"m looking into this as well. Will gladly let you be a guinea pig.

Built from parts, not a kit. Everything from Log Cabin Shop. It's a .40 cal flint lock - Douglas barrel, Siler Lock, assorted other parts to build this southern style rifle.

Dad built one when I was a kid. 54cal hawken and he killed a couple very nice elk with it. Wasn't bad at all, really.

Candles, chisels, and files have to be hand made as well.

Then after you're done, the big files are to be made into knives.

Before you invest in tools and finishing supplies, I would google to see what Magpul makes for furniture and then see Skelso or EyeGuy would cerakote it for you Maybe even do a hydra-dip in a camp patern.

Kryptek cerakoted side hammer.... yeah, that's happening. Michael just got done learning how to do it down at KG guncoating so we'll be rocking on that soon in house. I'm sure I'll have a few stupid projects while we're at it just to rile some people up.

Thank you. It's a shooter too - not because of anything special I did, but because of the barrel.

I'm just imagining AC wearing a coonskin cap and running across some ridge in the Appalachians thinking he's Chingachgook or Uncas or Magua.

And I can't help but laugh, and laugh, and laugh....

Between making the firearm and lugging it's heavy ass around, I'd say he can do whatever he wants.

Except *****. That's not allowed.

I'm fortunate to have my great-great grandfather's black powder long rifle.

Surely you could get a hold of a cheap muzzle loader for this.... Please!, That would get so many people riled up.
