Interesing, apparently you cannot drive a UTV on Matagorda Beach. Golf carts are OK, but SxS are not.

What is the rationale behind this? I could understand if it was a true golf cart, but since many "golf carts" are essentially the same as a UTV, it just doesn't make sense to me. At least I'll save the trouble of taking it down this weekend, but it would have been handy to have to get to the beach versus the truck.

Top speed, loud, it would become a white trash free-for-all tearing up the beach while playing loud ass hick-hop, way worse than it is now. There would be a gazillion trucks and utility trailers parked at every beach entrance.

Accourding to the county commissioners they will be legal in 2019. Something got screwed up in the bill last year the legalized the golf carts and that was supposed to include UTVs

Rationale is usually one of 2 things:

Public beaches are technically public roadways and UTVs aren't allowed on public roads in TX. Not sure how that logic works if they're allowing golf carts.

They don't want people tearing up the dunes.

There's a guy on 2cool that made his UTV street legal. Has a license plate and all. I'm about to start the process on mine. It's pretty straight forward

As it is now, you get a few brohs that drink a little much and get a little crazy at times in their trucks. Do a few donuts, gun the gas here and there and generally move along to their fishing or hanging on the beach.

Allow side x sides and the dumbassery will become an event in itself. Crowds of duallys showing up with flat beds full of the things. Drag races, mudding back in the bermuda flats, blasting over the dunes. There's a huge community of facebook flatbills that drive all over the south to go do this at private parks built just for it. Now imagine it on a relatively undisturbed piece of public property.

Uh, I'd like to know how that's possible. There have been many attempts over the years and I have never seen anyone be able to complete the titling requirements.

Here's the thread on 2cool where he gets it done and explains the process.

We spend the weekend at Matagorda beach (the water was absolutely awesome, BTW - clear in the shallows to a depth of around 4 feet, no color change at all with the exception of more of a green hue at the sand bars). Beach was 10x what Surfside was the last few times I went - easily 50 yards of beach, sand was clean, trash was minimal and the best part - the people were minimal. I couldn't believe how little trash there was to be honest, still can't get over it. I found a crawfish bag that washed up that made for a great trash bag - less than 1/4 of it was full when we left, and the majority of that was our water bottles and food wrappers. Last time I went to Surfside, you could have filled a 40 yard roll off with all of the garbage on the beach that piece of sht beachgoers left there.

Having said that, I watched several jeeps out there doing doughnuts and basically being morons, along with more than one truck. Typical music as well. I can't see how a UTV would be any different, sans the trailers at the beach part (which is something I hadn't thought of TBH). My brother pulled some idiot out who got his Mustang stuck at the entrance. Glad we didn't take it down, it would have been more of a pain than anything in retrospect.

You used to be able to drive them on Matagorda Beach, they didn't even have to be street legal, all you needed was a slow moving vehicle sign. You know the orange triangle on a tractor.

About 5 or so years ago, maybe more, some people where jumping dunes in a couple of Razors. One came off the top of a dune and didn't know the other Razor was on the other side and landed on top of the other. Almost killed a few people, they got messed up really bad. Life flight and all. They banned UTV's right after that incident.

Recently the county just passed a law that allows golf carts to be driven on county roads as long as they are street legal, and some permit I believe, but it still excludes UTV's. That's why golf carts are allowed. I have seen the guy that made his UTV street legal on Matagorda beach, but if I remember correctly he has a license plate and everything on that rig.

The short answer is the government is going to save you from yourself because of the actions from a few idiots.

I would love to be able to use my Ranger on the beach, but I honestly have no issue with them being banned. There are too many idiots out there and all it does is ask for accidents to happen. Hell, last time we were at Surfiside we almost saw two kids get run over cause some jackass was doing donuts with a car. He lost control and went into a crowded area. I can only imagine the chaos with UTVs added to already what is out there.

Even when they were legal it was still illegal to drive them on the dunes.
