So I can't find a safe that can fit my guns and fit into the room I want it in. Would have to cut a hole in the wall remove studs etc.

Anyways... I'd be happy turning the whole room into a fairly secure room. Yes you could go through the wall to get the stuff, but come on, that's not a burglary MO.

So what should I be looking at as far as types of doors, reienforced door framing etc to put in to make the room more secure??? It's got a cheapo hollow core door on it now.

If you are planning on upgrading the door/jam to be more secure or resist impact, 2 layers of drywall wont stop someone when they find the door is hard to break through or down. If its just to stop kids from getting in, just a normal lock with keycode or bio entry would work.

Solid core exterior door
Reinforce the deadbolt with a minimum 1/8" steel nailed in place between the door jamb and the double stud behind it. There will be room between the jamb and the stud as the latch side has room for shims. The nails you use should be long enough to penetrate the second stud.

How big is the wall that door is on? If you're really wanting to lock it down, put some steel behind the sheetrock. Either to all the way to the nearest corner or go with a combination of steel and thinner sheetrock. Even a thin sheetmetal would stop a kick attack and require some extra tools.

Though I expect the OB purists to be along shortly with tips on building a reinforced CMU wall.

Congrats.

You have graduated to the fake wall with Auto slide outs complete with custom fitted padding, LED lighting and sound FX. Do you like the traditional maroon velvet look or the high-tech clan look? Of course that may depend on your fire arm preferences.

It's that or get off the OB.

If you're going to build a safety door, you can't really leave the walls just plain drywall that can easily be removed or broken through.

A simple wire mesh within the wall would likely be enough to secure the room, but thats still more drywall work than simply opening it up enough to get the safe in.

Problem is I'd have to remove multiple studs to get a safe in.

Do y'all really think a B&E burglar is going to break through a wall when they find a locked door just to see what's in the room?

A lot of burglaries are done by someone that's familiar with the home, so it isn't unthinkable.

I think it might depend on how badass of a door you put up. If the door kind of looks like all of the other doors in the house (painted, same general design) and the person doing the B&E jiggles the handle and it's locked, then they may move on. If you put up a door that makes it look like something valuable is behind there, then their curiosity may compel them to do a little more destruction to find out.

To secure firearms at home, I bought a combo doorknob/deadbolt that is only accessible by a key. Had to drill extra hole in door for deadbolt and a place in door jam for dead bolt. Pretty simple and secure. Primary purpose is to keep kids from accessing guns. Door leads to a small hallway closet. I assume that Thieves would be able to break door down within minutes but I hope that alarm would do its job and limit time on property if no one was home.

Since the VAST majority of home burglaries are break, snatch and grab you will probably be just fine with a solid core door and a reinforced door jam. We did that with our linen closet and its worked great. A pro will get in no matter what you do but , unless you area prime target for a pro the likelihood of getting hit by the " Phantom" is almost nil. A good home alarm with a good siren will limit the time that the drug fiend punk has to rummage the you place so they will likely juts kick the locked door a few times , grab a TV or 2 and run.

There are safes you can assemble too:

Wouldn't one of the "protected by Texags outdoors" signs in the front yard be enough? That would save you a lot of cash.

Likely not.

Door jamb armor plus a solid core or metal door and a double set of deadbolts.

Hmm, I thought all you would need to do is slap one of these bad boys on your hollow core door and call it a day!

Or you could outfit an Airstream like in The Accountant. That was pretty sweet.

Get down to the foundation. Build a cinder block and concrete vault that is half the size of that room. Put a vault door on it.

Thats the solution you seek.

We installed a vault door on our gun storage area. On top of that, we added in 3/4 ply wood on all of the walls. Could somone get through? Yeah, but the extra time it would take would mean the police would likely be here. They like us so usually get a quick response. That was a relatively cheap upgrade that improved security immensely.

How would you protect against fire for a home "walk-in" safe?

Fire is the main reason I have a safe.

How much was the door?

And is it the same size as a normal door?

Does the room you intend to use have a window? If they want in fast, and cannot get thru door and the wall is a PITA, the window will be the weakest point.
