On the morning of June 6, 59-year-old Kim Hancock of Santa Rosa, California, was gored by a bull bison at Fountain Paint Pot in the Lower Geyser Basin.

Hancock and a crowd of people approached within ten yards of the bison while walking along a boardwalk. At one point, people were closer than 15 feet from the bison. When it crossed the boardwalk, the bison became agitated and charged the crowd, goring Hancock. The bison immediately left the area.

In a little over a month 4 people have been injured by wildlife in Yellowstone. And the 2nd time in 2018 someone was injured by a bison. Why can't people understand National Parks are not petting zoos? These are wild freaking animals.

I'm headed there in a little less than a month and I'm not ashamed to say I sort of want to see some dumb people just to laugh at them.

Folks just don't comprehend the power & speed of animals. Thanks to Disney, they lack the understanding that wild animals dgaf about you & will mess you up if they feel threatened.

In this instance it seems there was a large crowd of people, so folks who might have otherwise been cautious did something stupid because they were part of a group. I'm sure the boardwalk gave them a psychological sense of separation from the bull.

I can't imagine why the Bison might be defensive when approached by people...

I wish I could say I'm surprised. I've mentioned before that I saw a tourist in Yellowstone holding his iPad up like a shield as a bison trotted toward him. He finally ran behind his car. What saved him is that the buffalo was simply loping up the hill, not actually chasing him.

I watched lots of Disney growing up as a kid, and still understood that a 1,400 lb animal with horns might be able to hurt me.

Dumb people are just dumb.

They've only ever seen domesticated and zoo animals. The concept of wild is foreign to them.

I'm not THAT stupid if I can outrun the 59-year old lady!

Had a chance to do Yellowstone in January and it was incredible. Pricey, but amazing.

I will probably never try to go again in the summer. Too many stupids. Too big of a crowd. It's sad really.

I'm guessing lodging is a big part of that. I went to Yellowstone in the mid '90s and it was plenty crowded and Jackson was chock full of hippies at that point.

edit: The backcountry was nice and the scar from the big fire (1988?) was still easily visible. I liked the northern areas into Montana best, but that might have been due to the lack of tourists.

And food ain't cheap, either. Honestly, though, people have just about ruined it. I think ol' Teddy would weep if he saw it today.

Been almost 10 years exactly since I was in Yellowstone (saw Tetons, Yellowstone, and Banff in one trip). Need to go back, but Maine's calling my name again this year...

If it is like most National Parks, if you walk a mile off the beaten path you'll find the solitude you seek. Most folks seem to want to drive around & check out the scenic overlooks to get the selfie.

I'm headed to Maine at the beginning of August after a few days in Boston. Never been that way & really looking forward to it.

This. When I went to Yosemite last spring, we we pretty early in the season so the crowds were light but the park ranger told us that around forth of July time, "downtown" Yosemite has the same population density as L.A. but even in our short time there it was obvious, once you made it past the end of the paved/manicured trail, it thinned out rapidly.

We've been a couple of times and I'm always amazed at the amount of people who will approach wild animals with kids for a dumb picture.

I want to hand them a copy of the book, death in Yellowstone and say read this you idiots.

Off topic, but i can't imagine falling into one of the thermal pools. I saw a 25 year old guy almost fall into one, messing around. Nope nope nope.

When we went to Yellowstone many moons ago, we were given the advice to stay in Driggs, Idaho. It adds a lot of driving, but it's a ski area, so in the summer you can find some really nice lodging, really cheap.

Darwinian theory at work. Survival of the fittest, or in this case, a lack of intelligence, that thins the herd by one more idiot.

The year was 1973, the month was either late March or early April - my memory fades after all these years. I was a single Air Force Lieutenant stationed at a radar site near St Albans, Vermont and had just received orders to the ROK. I had also just taken delivery of an brand new Triumph TR-6. I took 10 days leave, put the top down, pulled up my turtle neck sweater, turned on the pathetic heater to keep my feet from freezing, and drove the Maine coast. It was off season for tourists, so even on a 1st Lieutenant's salary, I found nice accommodations in bed-and-breakfast inns along the way, great sea food, took 13 rolls of 35mm slides, saw harbors, light houses, beautiful little towns, and met many great people along the way. I'm sure after 45 years things have changed, and I know my memory has faded. But it was a trip I had to take before heading overseas, and one I've never regretted. I'd love to do it again.

Camden and Bar Harbor/Acadia. Spent 4 days in Bar Harbor last year and didn't even come close to doing everything we wanted to. Doing 5 or 6 days this go around.

Because today's bison have been taught by their parent's, parents, parents, parents, parents, to do that.

Not the right place but. Yellowstone and bison have reached the political level in current news.

That makes sense. I am working at a camp in wyoming and want to go see it but do not want to break the bank. Any suggestions on ways to see it on a budget?

The best advice we ever got about visiting GTNP and YNP was from a Park Ranger near Old Faithful.

Ranger: "You need to come visit in the fall when the Eds are here."
Us: "The Eds?!?"
Ranger: "The newly weds and the nearly deads."

We went last October and had a great time! Way less crowded, nice cool weather, and places to stay were much, much cheaper. We got some snow when we were there - got to hike in untouched snow on one of the trails. It was beautiful! September *might* be better as things were already starting to close up in October.

GD Bison entitlement programs! Taking the jobs of equally qualified cattle and Buffalo due to the historical wrongs done to them! Today's cows had nothing to do with those heinous actions!
