An owner asked me if he was to put antifreeze in a bucket on his roof would the squirrels drink and die

They are eating his lead jacks and some of his wood and I have no clue what he should do

I thought it could be a good idea but what about birds would they drink it also

Just thought I would ask

This sounds somewhat illegal but I'm no legal expert.

"Shoot them in the nuts"

Real answer- don't do this.

Put a Havahart trap on the roof with peanuts inside. He can trap every squirrel up there in a day or two with it.

Bad idea for a litany of reasons IMHO.

Has worked for me as well.

Or you could get some hardware cloth from the hardware store and make a vent stack condom for each one.

For people with squirrel problems, we put on 'bullet boots' with new roof installs. They SAY it works better than lead for deterring squirrels from chewing. But, that is expensive to install on existing roofing.

Literally...wrap your pipes...with hardware cloth.

As an aside, if he has had them chewing on his lead jacks enough to be a problem, he also now has water leaks. Need to do something soon.

Step 2: Lower into a pond until it stops shaking.

I used a roofing tar/paste from a gallon can to coat each lead stack pipe on my grandpas roof when the tree rats started eating it. Not one has been touched since. If the lead is not exposed, they don't go after it.

Step 3: Enjoy burning in hell.

If you don't have a pool, you can always shoot it in the balls and open the trap up in the yard to shoot the fleeing animal. It's 'the only way to kill a pig' so it could work here as well.

Trap em......shoot em........but antifreeze is an insanely stupid idea that has potential legal ramifications.

Not to mention being an exceedingly cruel way to kill anything.

Those little squirrel feeders from the hardware store that hold up a corn cob are great. They have a little backstop for the pellet. Put in middle of yard and post up on the patio with a bourbon in the evenings.

Somebody fed my German Shepard an antifreeze hamburger when I was younger. Great dog, some local drug dealers probably thought he was a drug dog as my parents were cops and he suffered for it. Not a good way to go, better to trap them or take them out with a B.B. gun.

Serious response: will you please enumerate those reasons?

My house is riddled with them and they're causing $1,000's in damage. Please give me a reason not to poison them.

How about your poisoned squirrel kills a federally protected raptor species? Then you end up

Or at least a heavy fine

You could end up poisoning animals you didn't intend to -- like migratory birds, endangered species, etc -- and end up in much deeper **** than you anticipated.

Or depending on where you live, it could be illegal to use antifreeze for poison.

Or some commie-loving journalist catches wind of what you're doing, posts it all over social media, and you get fired for "not sharing the values" of your employer.

Just a few quick thoughts that come to mind. Probably many others that are valid also.

Shoot 'em (legally), trap & releasedrown, sling shot, etc.

What if I inject liquified rat poison into a pecan and leave that pecan tucked where only a squirrel can get it? With a little effort, one can position the bait where only squirrels can get it.

I have just never seen a legal citation for the anti-poison attitude. Tried to google it several times and come up empty each time. If it's really illegal, I'm happy to learn.

Some poisons can kill whatever eats the poisoned squirrel, rat, etc. If the unintended victim happens to be protected the person who put out the poison could be in a lot of trouble. Is it likely to get caught, probably not, but the penalty is severe.

The damage to my house is 100% certain. What's better/worse, the 100% certainty of $1,000's in damage, or the ~0.01% chance of charges?
DatTallArchitect

There's no certainty as to what will or won't eat the poison. You could end up having a bunch of dead birds in your yard or a neighbors cat. That's the problem with poisons. Use the trap, as mentioned earlier, then if you catch the wrong animal you can turn it lose without harm.

I was just answering your question about legality. You can decide what you're comfortable with, risk wise. There's no risk to traps, etc.
