Just looking for a ballpark to compare too....asked in Home Improvement board but figured I'd ask here as well since this board seems to know stuff.

TL;DR

New Goodman 5 tin coil and furnace, $5500, decent price?

Long version;

Just ballpark to compare my quote to.

Our coil is leaking, 2nd time in 2 weeks they've had to add Freon, put 2.5lbs in today.

Our condenser is only 3.5yrs old, Goodman 5 ton, 13 seer, r10a Freon. Was replaced by home warranty right after we bought the house.

However coil is now shot and furnace is original to house, so 17yrs old.

Was told $3250 for new Goodman 5 ton evap coil, plenum and transition.

Do furnace at same time, knocks $425 of the normal price and would be an additional $2325. Furnace works, but is original and at least 17yrs old.

They will also install a media filter for free (I was quoted $400-500 previously for this).

So basically everything new in the attic would be $5575.00. This is the first time I've had to look at doing anything besides minor repairs so just wanted to get an idea of what is a ballpark price I should expect to pay.

EDIT: includes 10yr parts and labor warranty.

If you like to drive a Yugo, a Goodman is the right system for you.

They suck...and that is being kind.

BTW, I apologize to the Yugo owners for comparing them to a Goodman.

Price doesn't seem too bad. What is included in the 10 year warranty? Is the company reputable?

So your 3.5 year old system broke down and you're going to replace it with the same thing?

Did I read that right?

That would be a textbook definition of insanity.

No, outside unit is 3.5yrs old, attic wasn't replaced then.

It was done for "free" through the home warranty that came with the house.

Home warranty replaced with Goodman.

So now the coil has crapped the bed

Home warranty paid for Goodman so that's what I have, no issues so far

Warranty is parts and labor and he said only thing it doesn't cover is an annual check up. Capacitor blows he replaced free of charge, same for everything else

Have you called anyone for comparison prices in your area? Seems a bit high based off what you listed but your area may be higher than mine and guessing how much labor to replace duct work to make new unit fit is difficult w/o looking at it.

Wholesale the parts you listed are about $1200. The remainder is markup and labor.

Have they put a leak detector on it to be certain the coil is leaking and not the line set?

Leaks are almost always the evaporator coil. I used to rail on Goodman/Amana, but my experience with Lennox has been the same or worse. It seems they're all crap and you're doing really good to get 10 years out of any new system. Maybe Trane or carrier are better, but I wouldn't pay extra for the supposed quality sold these days. We've switched to the lowest end ruud for rental property and though noisy, they've held up well at half the cost.

Yes, I went up in the attic with him with his detector and when he placed it inside on the coil (which also had oil on it) it beeped like crazy. I'm guessing that means leak, like he said it did.

I have not bid it anywhere else, as this is just who I used to add 1.25lbs of Freon 2 weeks ago. Company was referred & given that it was Sunday, and he came out & got me running again, I was happy to pay for today. When they came out 2 weeks ago they said we should monitor it and see how bad the leak is...made until last night when it froze over.

I also hate knowing the wholesale cost, because that's a lot of extra in labor.

There's a few other miscellaneous things his doing as well, but all minor like I've flow sensor in the pan and removing an extra inline filter on the condeser that the home warranty guy never took off. At least I believe that's what it is, small round thing with copper tubing running in and out both sides.

I'm in Cypress (Houston)

MrJonMan,

I had a Goodman 3.5 ton heat pump system evaporator coil replaced in Waco in the fall of 2016 for $1,200 and change.

Plus, that was an R-22 system so part of that was for R-22 refrigerant charges.

I don't know how much it affected the final price, but I found the leak myself (injected UV), told them the part # of the coil, and asked them for an installed price. They never had to come out until it was time to install it. Also, this unit is in a first floor hallway closet, so it's easier than an attic install.

I only got a 1 year warranty, but these guys do good work and they know I'll inspect it.

FWIW, they also quoted me a brand new Goodman air handler (no furnace) for $2,700 installed. Apparently sometimes you have to go that route because they can't find a coil to fit the older air handler.

You may want to shop around, although the hotter it gets, the higher HVAC guys seem to get. I suppose I don't blame them. During the cooler months I imagine they run in the red.

If your leak were smaller, I suggest trying one of the better 'leak stops'. Although that's considered blasphemy to the 'do it by the book' guys, I've used those with about a 60% success rate in the past, both at home and in a manufacturing plant. And no, it doesn't cause the compressor to fail unless you do it very, very wrongly.

Good luck.

$1k-ish/ton is a good rule of thumb.

From the posts after you replied to mine, I see you are on the right track. Just wanted to comment on your reply to me. I did not intend to make my answer sound like they were gouging you on labor. I was trying to convey that it is difficult to know Tha amount of labor without having eyes on. Being in the attic makes it more challenging. Whether you can stand up and walk on decked floor or crawl on ceiling joists makes a difference. The type and amount of duct work that must be changed makes a difference, etc...
