Looking for guidance and suggestions for my rural (Lavaca County) well water system. We have a 12 year old system. It consists of a 350 gallon holding tank, pressure tank, pump, and softening/ filter system. Water pressure is good. Well is roughly 200 feet deep. Our water is very hard and the salt system is very inconsistent. I am interested in knowing about more 'modern' softening / filtration systems that you might be using. For those with recent rural builds with water wells, what equipment are you using? Please help a fella out by posting information about your systems if you are pleased.

Thanks!

The first thing to do is get your water hardness tested and also test for iron and other metals.

When I shopped for a new softener I looked into whether I needed other treatment for:

Filter for sand
Chlorinator / UV system for bacteria
Iron filter

I bought my demand type softener from Moore Supply.

Any interest in doing rainwater harvest?

I personally think its the way to go if you have the roof sq/ft for collection and a spot for a big tank. Its the direction my family is going. Ground water well for outside hose bibs/animials/back up, and rain water as the homes primary water source.

Something to consider. I'll document our rainwater install and info as we get to that part of the home build.

We have had wells for 150 years.

I'm going with rainwater.

As someone who has had to pull my pump 2x in the last 25 years [130ft], If i had to do it over I would certainly supplement with rainwater collection.

Don't get as much precip here as you do there, so I would likely still have to have a well.
Plus my water tastes GREAT!

Thanks for the feedback thus far. Rainwater is not up for consideration at this time. Looking for thoughts on modern softener / filtration systems for well water.

Jealous. Sitting at 625 over here in the Hill Country. Good deliverability, but its hard with a little sulphur to it. Thus the driving reason for rainwater with this well as backup.

Get your water tested before you do anything, you won't know what direction you need to go with any type of treatment or filtration until then.

There are several brands out there that are good, depends on your knowledge, ability to learn and mechanical aptitude. I am on a community well down on the coast, water is hard as F here. I wanted something that required zero electricity and that was completely mechanical in nature, so I bought an Aquasana system. There are plenty of other good ones though, Moore Supply has some, Grainger has some, Culligan, even some of the big box stores will have systems that are pretty decent.

Going to test my water again before purchase of filtration system

But i do have h2s in my water
Sediment isnt an issue, water not hard, no chlorides
Would like chemicals and bacteria treated for peace of mind. One of my.home kits showed a positive for chemicals.

No lead

Recommendations on filters to install to get rid of h2s and treat chemicals and bacteria?

I read reverse osmosis treats h2s but i would like something.for.the chemicals and bacteria. Going to test again to triple check everything before buying filters. Only for sure thing is h2s smell. Also, both home test showed a high pH based on color. Going to catch a sample to take to work and test in our lab. I wont be able.to do that for 2 weeks so just looking for filtration ideas. H2s sucks when running.the water but on bright side i can fart and blame it on the water

This site has good information on a wide range of treatment options.

How to treat well water

I would think 12 years service without replacing the resin may be the expected life. In Wimberley on a chlorinated water system, my experience has been 5-8 years service life before changing the resin.

As others have stated have your water tested. Hardness, iron and manganese. The other variable affecting system sizing is flow rate. Pre-treatment may be required.

Info on softener resin

I'm from Lavaca Co. and I can't say I have seen a system installed with a holding tank for residential applications (family is a pump installer and plumbers). What part of the county are you in? How is the system set up: well to softener to holding tank to pressure boost system? What are the uses for the system, e.g. peak flow.

Note also that softeners only treat a set amount of water before requiring a regeneration cycle and during regen, untreated water bypasses the unit if there is demand. Outside faucets and irrigation systems should be plumbed separately from the softened water system.
