Pretty excited about trying out this little booger, first on my own shooting during dry fire/live drills, but hopefully as a tool to use in classes in the future. I finally decided to try one out and one is coming on the brown truck today.

It's a box you can attach to a pistol rail that tracks muzzle movement of a firearm before, during and after a shot, then transmits that data via bluetooth to any android or apple device with the mantis app installed that the box is connected to.

So you can use it as a dry fire tool to track trigger press quality, or to see how your recoil control is during live fire, etc.

If it works well, I think it may be a very useful tool to show students what they're doing incorrectly with a trigger in real time, instead of just having to hear me tell them what they're doing. Just one more way to get information from me to the student, hopefully.

I'll be doing some dry fire work with it today and tomorrow, then taking it to the range tomorrow afternoon or Thursday.

I have a couple more free classes for OBers coming up, so if you're one of them you may get stuck being one of my guinea pigs for this thing.

That is freaking cool. Can't wait to see more in depth review.

My partner has one and loves it. He's found himself practicing more which in and of itself is a benefit.

Very informative feedback and he's noticed a difference at the range already.

That's a great point. An easy way to keep track of dry fires in and of itself is going to be a great thing.

I'm looking forward to trying to use this in some of the local matches where they won't mind a little non legal equipment on the gun and watching just how badly my trigger control goes to crap in competition. Do it with a go pro and I should be able to analyze exactly when my technique is poor.

My experience with the device was limited to some dry firing of his 1911 in my office, but I can tell you that it quickly picked up and noted my natural tendencies/bad habits and nailed them. I was impressed at how accurate it was in identifying and diagnosing my flaws in technique.

Only dry fired so far, hitting live range with it next week.

It has a few bugs but works pretty well. Im most excited to see what it can do for a student, because the feedback I'm getting from it so far is mostly stuff I know. Before I look at the score for a shot I can usually tell if I had a bad press or not. I think people who shoot less than I do aand aren't familiar with a dry fire routine might really benefit from the Mantis though as they learn how to dry fire and what a good trigger press is.

This seems like a great tool to me. What's the price like on one?

I think they're ~150 on Amazon right now.

Amazing.

When we were running low on wadcutter we used to stick a new, sharpened pencil in our barrel and dry fire into a target taped to the office wall to hone our skills.

Just hit them up about a dealer account. I'm pretty certain that I'll sell three just between me and the minions.

Stahp!

My wallet is already light enough as it is.....

But I actually could really benefit from this for dry firing practice..... Dammit.

I have one. It's awesome. But I'm a n00b compared to bender so I will defer to his review. But yea, I'm a fan.

Attempt #2 to make it to the range this morning for live fire foiled by rain, and it looks like rain all week.

I don't mind shooting in the rain normally, but I don't know how waterproof the Mantis is and I'm not really interested in testing that just yet.

Dry fire has been mostly good, my one complaint so far is that during dry fire the Mantis occasionally picks up the trigger resetting as I rack the slide as a shot. Unsurprisingly, it grades those shots super low. There is a way to mark shots as false positives which is great. The one problem is it still uses them to calculate your average score for the session, so I'll occasionally have a session with an average score of 82 when my worst shot was registered as an 88 because they're still using the false positives to generate the average.

Rainy week, guess I'll dry fire a lot.

Just saw this pop up on my FB ads https://mantisx.com/pages/how-mantisx-works

Came here to post and realized we have semi reviews on this already.

Any updates on live fire?

Sorry I'm just now sitting down at a computer. Saw the thread bump but my long ass replies are obnoxious to type on a phone.

Yes, still like the MantisX and think it has value, with a couple caveats:

If you are experienced in dry fire, it won't tell you much you don't already know. It will keep track of how many times you dry fire, which is nice if you're into that.

Live fire also works and can tell you things you don't notice "in the moment". My big gripe is that it doesn't fit holsters with the Mantis attached, and I don't do much training or shooting that isn't from the holster.

If you are a brand new pistol shooter, it's also not going to be super helpful. It will give you feedback but you won't know what it means or how to fix it.

Also beware of the score trap. It's easy to pull the trigger slow and perfect and knock out a bunch of 99.X% shots. But that doesn't help fix any issues in your trigger pull at a faster speed.

Beyond that, I found it helpful occasionally when teaching new shooters. I'd tell them "you did this". They don't think they did. Mantis shows them they did exactly what I told them they did. "oh, I guess I did." So, it can be useful for an instructor with a new student, but only a certain kind of student, and most folks who teach can figure out ways to show people the errors they are making without the magic box anyway.

I still have mine and don't regret buying it, but I don't use it for dry fire very often, mostly because of the holster compatibility issues.

This is what I am looking into. A dryfire magazine with the Manits-X built into it. Use your existing holster, dryfire without re-racking, use your own gun vs the SIRT training pistols.
