Rock Island 1911 Failure To Feed

Bought one of these from a guy at work a while back who needed some money.

I've tried various kinds of ammo and different brands magazines. When i shoot the Wilson combat magazine that's brand new, it almost always fails to feed one round out of the magazine. But if i put just six rounds in the magazine, it will cycle all the way through.

Is this an issue with the magazines, the weapon or the ammo?

I'm stumped which doesn't take much but if it needs to go to a gun smith i don't mind taking it if it'll fire correctly.

A few things you can do:

1. Try different magazines. Sounds like the ones you have may have weak springs, assuming the FTF is on the last round or two?

2. Polish your feed ramp and chamber. Could be as simple as a burr or something that is causing enough of a hang up to get the FTF.

3. Clean the hell out of your chamber with a bronze brush and solvent. Could be some carbon, copper or lead fouling that is causing enough of an issue for a FTF.

If those don't work, take it to somebody that can give it a once over and see if there are any obvious issues.

Thanks
I will give that a try.

Fails to feed fmj, jhp, or both?

Failing to feed the last round or failing to feed randomly through the magazine?

If the same ammo and gun are working with other magazines, might just have to get rid of the problem magazine. Some magazines and some 1911s just don't play well together due to different tolerances by different manufacturers.

This is exactly why, while I'd like to own a 1911 for fun, my duty pistol will always be a Glock.

Throw a new recoil spring in there while you're at it. I always do this with used guns that I buy

Normally when the magazine is full it will stop around round 3 or 4

But if the magazine is at 6, it Will cycle through.

I've only shot fmj with it

It only does it with that magazine?

Does it with both the Armscor/rock island magazine and Wilson combat magazine.

The shoulders of the Wilson mags are a little higher than standard and sometimes causes an awkward shift/fit between the mag and the ejector. I've seen ejectors (non stainless steel) broken off from slamming Wilson mags home; also a shifting of the mag during the cycle can cause just enough of a cycle issue with the ejector to cause an ftf.

Not a common incidence, but something to check. You could have two separate issues: a 1911 that hates standard mags (pretty common), and one that doesn't get along with Wilson'seither (rare). As you know, two 1911s are rarely alike.

Couple other possibilities:
- recoil spring too strong, not letting the slide go all the way to the rear (unlikely)
- limp wrist (also unlikely?)
- imperfections/tolerance issue at feed ramp

Get a new spring kit from Wolff. Their website should tell you which one.

I had the exact same problem with my RIA 1911. I sent it back to them and they fixed the issue, unfortunately, they didn't tell me exactly what they did.

I believe they switched out the extractor because it wasn't grabbing enough of the spent case and the next in line round was getting pinned under the spent casing and the slide was jammed open.

I took it to 3 gun stores, bought Wilson combat pro mags, and tried multiple different ammo before sending it back and nothing would feed for one full magazine. Now, it eats anything i put through it.

Good call.

Extractors are cheap and easy to replace, I'd replace the extractor and recoil spring and go from there.

I had a Citadel with similar FTF tendencies. With good mags like the WC's, I think your issue might be a tight extractor. I slightly bent the extractor to reduce the force squeezing the case. I also smoothed the edges of the hook that would restrict the case from sliding up into position. Do not buff/file the sharp edge that goes in front of the lip of the case. The sharp edge is what grabs the case for extraction.
