I'm looking for getting something on the smaller side. Maybe a 12 gun safe with shelves for documents, jewelry, etc... would like to be able to bolt down and have a way to run a cord for a golden rod.

Would this be something worth getting through you?

On safes... if you can find someone that wants one as well, I can get you a great deal on one. The biggest issue is that they ship them on a pallet and ship them freight. Can generally put two on one pallet. The pallet shipping is usually like $150 or so. Also, they will drop off at your driveway but not install. So, if you can find someone else that wants one, I can probably make it worth your while. If it's a close neighbor, just have both dropped off to you and be done. If it's not that close, maybe whoever gets it dropped off at their door gets it for $50 on shipping and the other person pays $100 on it or something like that.

Case in point:

Item model 75020. I can get that to you for about $1200 plus shipping. Freight on it would put it at $1350, which is still better than OP but if you can find someone that wants to go in with you, that puts you each at $1275 or so. Make sense?

Thanks for the response and yes it makes perfect sense. I will admit I am ignorant when it comes to gun safes but was a bit surprised at $1500 for a 12 gun safe. What am I missing from a $700 academy safe vs this one? Learn me good please.

Could be a number of things. That was just the first one I saw that wasn't like 5K so I used it as a price point. The differences that you'll see are going to be fire rating, how you get into the safe (keypad, combo lock, etc), accessories, things like that. Hard to say without having a specific model to compare against.

Steel thickness also is a big factor. Lots of your "entry-level" safes from Academy are going to be not much different that a Harbor Freight toolbox. Some resources:

Your big box stores have some good pricing on decent safes and most let you ship to store for free or cheap. A 12 gun is easily a dolly'able safe IMO. I do not recommend trying to load, bring home and install a 74 gun safe that weights 1100lbs+ lol, made that mistake once, never again.

Edit: If you get an electronic lock, make sure it has a key override. pure electronic is just a problem waiting to happen.

Edit 2: Home Depot is where my brother ordered his from. Lots to pick from. Check its fire rating and everything before you buy.

It's all about what you are looking for in a safe, like EyeGuy said. If you want something that can't be opened in a couple of minutes with a pry bar, it's gunna end up being at least $750 to $1,000.

When I was looking at Moore Security at I-10 and 8 last year, you could get a Liberty 24 gun safe with a 60 minute fire rating and a manual lock delivered and installed in Houston for around $1,300. I'll get my next safe from them alsowould recommend.

I second Moore Security. I bought my safe from them. Good family run business that delivers and installs their products. He will educate you on what you need and won't sell you something you don't.

Also, always go bigger than what you feel you need. Think of safes as buying a tent. Unless you are ok with sleeping on top of someone, a two man tent is not something hardly any two people are going to want to sleep in together. Unless you want to force the issue and that's another discussion. One where my wife won't stalk the thread and see.

Hi Arin. Love you.

But, back to topic at hand, a couple things to think of with sizing:

A twelve gun safe is basically like saying you want to store 12 shotguns. If you're talking a rifle with optics, that's going to be a lot bigger. If you're talking an AR15 with a scope, that's even bigger still.

Also, future use. Is this going to hold what you want it to in a year? Five years? Ten years? Spending $500 more on a much larger safe will future proof you from having to buy another $2000 safe in a lot of cases.

Cool thing when talking to me about safes.... I'm just barely in the safe business. I know enough about them to help steer you in the right direction, but I am not going to really care if you buy from me or not. And I try to keep it this way in general, but with safes, if I tell you that you need to spend $50 or $100 more on something, there's a firm reason for it.

Gap integrity is going to matter more than anything else in a safe in the price range you are looking for. If someone can get a crowbar in the gap in your door it will take them seconds to pull a part a ****ty residential security box. Get a good safe. Tightly fit doors, thick steel, a big old school knob for the lock, heavy and bolted and have lice of mind. Also an12 gun safe is a 7 gun safe tops. Especially if you want shelves for other stuff. I have MAYBE 23 guns in a 50 gun safe.

Did anyone mention Moore Security? ;-)
I picked up a Liberty safe from them, delivered and installed.

It may be overkill, but I'm giving Sturdy Safes a look. Anyone here own one?

Question: The "fire ratings" are pretty much BS, correct? I understand that there is no industry standard, and each manufacturer rates their own safe?
