I have 8 to 10 acres of unimproved pasture land that is covered in grass burs. The soil is sandy loam on the river bottom so the stickers just take over. I was going to spray a preemergent tomorrow and the only chemical the feed store sells is Prowl H20 for stickers.

The pasture has pecan, live oak, and post oak trees throughout. I don't want to harm my trees by spraying this chemical but I can't seem to locate whether this chemical will harm trees. The salesman at the feed store was less than confident and his response was "I dont think so".

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm curious how to get rid of stickers as well. Hopefully someone will chime in and help us out.

It may be too late to use a pre-emergent for round one of grassburs. Pastora is one of the few herbicides for post-emergent control, and even then the plants need to be young/small (no burrs developed).

If you live in central or south Texas it's too late for a pre-emergent for sand burrs. Should have been applied probably mid February. Like previous poster said Pastora probably your best option unless you are in north Texas and it might be too late for pre-emergent there too.

Fire. I hear it works.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Imazaquin for sand burs..the Prowl should be no problem for the trees.

I'm around Fort Worth. Hopefully the Prowl will work. Thanks

We had a family friend that had a place we dove hunted that had a lot. Someone told him to overfertilize and it would burn them up. Well there was some bad timing with rain and he ended up with Boone and Crockett stickers. He ended up getting some sheep and letting them roam the pasture for a few months. He then sheared them and burned the wool, problem solved.

Serious answer: improved bermudagrass and N. Or even common bermuda. Fertilizer and grazing probably kills more grassburs than any chemical does.

Bonus: your pecans need nitrogen, too.

Prowl (pendimethalin) isnt going to hurt your trees one bit. You could dump a full jug at the base of the tree and it woudn't know it. It has PRE only activity on annual grasses, wont kill or harm perennial grasses. You may even get some control of small seeded broadleaves. Spray away if you're in N. Texas. As others mentioned, Pastora is an option later in the year, but Plateau is far superior In sandburs IMO. Also, you'll need a little rain to incorporate it. Its essentially non-mobile in the soil, so no worries about offsite movement. Your rig will be yellow when you're done, BTW.

I don't believe Prowl is labeled for "unimproved" pasture - bermudagrass only, and there is a grazing restriction after use. Pastura may work on young plants, but it also has a nasty habit of killing some desirables.
