Shoot a Silver Hunter now and love it but I am looking to upgrade. Curious as to what yalls thoughts are on the Broqning Maximus and Benelli Ethos. I have not shot nor had any experience with either of them.

Thanks in advance!

I have an ethos and my brother has the browning. Both exceptional guns. You cant go wrong with either. Maintenance is easier on the benelli. Benelli has more recoil. Browning cycles faster. Benelli never has a FTF. Brother said browning has had one with him and it had one with me. Yhey shoulder pretty different. Browning is a little tighter into the shoulder. I prefer the benelli due to the simplicity of the design and the maintenance ease.

In typical TexAgs fashion, the Beretta A400 is the right answer

Benelli for the sheer simplicity

Took by Benelli Super 90 to Argentina fifteen years ago. Put over 7000 rounds through it in four days and only cleaned it once with no jams.

I'm sure Browning makes a great product but that experience made me a loyal Benelli customer for life.

Your body is a lot more resilient when you're 17 years old. I'd be probably have to be hospitalized if I tried that at my current age.

How did you keep the barrel from warping with that much heat going through it? I bet you could cook some bacon on it.

If you want a single shot. A guy that comes on our pheasant hunts had one for a couple years and could never get it to cycle. I liked walking next to him. More birds for me to shoot at! He bought a Super X3 2 years ago and can't be happier.

My brother and brother in law both have a Maxus and I have a SX3 & SX4 (same action as the Browning) and none of us have had any problems.

If you want a gun that breaks gas rings all the time. Dad had to send his back to Baretta twice, each time after only shooting the gun in one round of clays. Fortunately, he doesn't own that gun any longer.

Well, stick to Benelli and let the beretta guys shoot when your gun fails.

Hunting on a club with several Benelli or Beretta guys I have seen first hand the abuse of both and the issues of both.... I know quite a few Benelli guys that always bring "back up guns" while I've never seen a Beretta guy do so. Makes you think.

I will stick with my O/U's for upland field se and my SBE II for my wet work.

I'm hearing bad things about Browning's dura-touch coating that they use on many synthetic stocks, including some of the Maxus shotguns. Apparently it gets sticky and starts to fail. I believe there is a class action suit over it right now. Just something to keep in mind.

That being said the rubber recoil inserts and recoil pd on my Benelli are rapidly deteriorating after only a few years so there's that as well.

It's actually pretty normal to replace recoil pads every few years - they get hard or deteriorate, depending on the composition of the rubber. It's common to all brands of shotguns and aftermarket pads.

The duratouch coating on my 1st year SX3 did that. My sx4 doesn't have it as I don't think my brothers Maxus does either. The wood stock on the brother in laws maxus is nice

This may be somewhat true for the softer rubber, foam, or gel recoil pads as I am learning on my Benelli, but I would still expect them to last more than 4 years.
It is not "common to all brands of shotguns and aftermarket pads" though. Most rubber or synthetic recoil pads like Pachmayrs should last decades. I have some recoil pads that are 40+ years old. The Kick Eez on my 870 is 20+ years old.

The problem with the Benelli is that it is not just the butt pad that is deteriorating (a $40 replacement from Limbsaver, or $85 from Benelli), but it is also the comort-tech comb (cheek) pad that costs $100 and the chevron shaped inserts that to the best of my research are not able to be replaced. When these parts deteriorate to the point that I can't stand it anymore I'll likely replace the entire stock with the standard (non-comfortech) stock which only costs a little more than the replacement recoil parts.

Thanks for all of the comments, suggestions. I'm open to other suggestions as well, just wanted to get everyone's take on those two. Ideally, it would be for clays and some field work, mostly clays but it's is nice to have stuff that is easy to disassembly/reassemble and clean. I'm not a big fan of wiping fingerprints off constantly

I do, I put 4,000 rounds down the tube of a montefeltro in Argentina in November. I could have easily doubled that if I hunted the mornings, or mid days, but chose not too BC I was there with the wife and she wanted to fish, eat and screw (then nap) everyday until about 4pm. I gladly obliged but I have a buddy that got hair up his ass and shot 1,000 birds in 1 hour and 47 minutes one day, which took about 1600 rounds.

...carry the one...

That's one shot every 10.9 seconds for an hour and forty-five minutes. That's crazy.

So how many eggs does an Argetinian dove lay at one time? about 200?

I would personally choose the Browning over the Benelli but that is because I have always shot Brownings. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but the Benelli being an inertial gun it will have a little bit more felt recoil than the gas operated Browning, it may not matter in a dove field but with heavy loads it will be noticeable. Also, the Benelli receiver is just ugly to me. The one that fits the best is the real answer.
