It's actually pretty normal to replace recoil pads every few years - they get hard or deteriorate, depending on the composition of the rubber. It's common to all brands of shotguns and aftermarket pads.
This may be somewhat true for the softer rubber, foam, or gel recoil pads as I am learning on my Benelli, but I would still expect them to last more than 4 years.
It is not "
common to all brands of shotguns and aftermarket pads" though. Most rubber or synthetic recoil pads like Pachmayrs should last decades. I have some recoil pads that are 40+ years old. The Kick Eez on my 870 is 20+ years old.
The problem with the Benelli is that it is not just the butt pad that is deteriorating (a $40 replacement from Limbsaver, or $85 from Benelli), but it is also the comort-tech comb (cheek) pad that costs $100 and the chevron shaped inserts that to the best of my research are not able to be replaced. When these parts deteriorate to the point that I can't stand it anymore I'll likely replace the entire stock with the standard (non-comfortech) stock which only costs a little more than the replacement recoil parts.
