Fishing License Timing Questions

How long do you want to ignore this user?
This year will be my first time to purchase an "off-cycle" fishing license, meaning it is not part of my August to August seasonal super combo (hunt + fish).

I found the 2017 post below on TPWD so looks like there is a true annual (date to date vs seasonal) option for fishing, regardless of when purchased:

Quote:

AUSTIN The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reminds hunters and anglers that the new 2017-2018 licenses go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 15. All current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) expire Aug. 31

Looks like the annual license is my best bet now because a super combo would expire in August in 5 months. Now.. if I do plan on buying a hunting license in August, can I buy a pro-rated fishing license today from just March to August? Weighing all my options.

I would like to have this lined out before I talk to someone at Academy who may not know what they're doing. Thoughts?

I just bought my own fishing license yesterday. It expires August 31. The price was not pro-rated.

The August thing is for Sept 18- Aug 19 licenses. As CW stated, the state doesn't pro-rate (other than offering a 1 day or 3 day option.)

When you buy your license for next year, it becomes active Sept 1.

Don't think they pro rate.

If you bought a year from purchase date liscence you'd just be out of sync between hunting and fishing liscences unless you wanted to pay extra and lose the 7 months you paid for.

Buying a liscence in a store can be brutal... TPWDs website is easy and I think the convenience fee is only 1$.

I went to Walmart. Back in the fishing department. It took about 3 minutes.

I bought mine at the local gun shop. Took 4 minutes.

If you purchase online, you have the option for a full 12 months, sounds like what you need.

Even online, a Texas hunting/fishing licence expires on 8/31/xx.

Also, OP... I believe your Super Combo will still cost the same in August, regardless of your existing valid fishing license. Just think of it as a donation to TPWD.

Thanks for the link AgEng.

For any one interested:

Freshwater Package:$30
Saltwater Package:$35
All-Water Package:$40
Year-from-Purchase All-Water Package:$47

It is only $7 more to have to last date to date, annually versus seasonal.

I will take the $7 "risk" and if I purchase a super combo before hunting season, I'll just think of the $7 as a donation as stated above. Fairly certain I will, just hate to pay $40 for a 5 month fishing license if $7 more would've got me 12 months guaranteed.

I stand corrected. This must be something new, but then again, I never buy just a fishing license but instead get my super combo each August.

Yeah, was kind of a one off thing for me as well. I've always had the super combo. I was thinking... surely as fishing is year around versus seasonal hunting there is some type of date to date system for non-hunters.

I eventually would bite the bullet and lose money somewhere though due to the August hunting license system. Even if I don't hunt this season, I would next.
