I might be bombarded for lack of wife control, but my wife purchased a miniature Austrialian Shepard about 6 months ago. I wont comment on what she paid, but it was stupid money for a dog. She is obviously a gyp and we are thinking about getting her fixed.

Seeing how much she paid for her, is there a market out there for these type dogs. I am thinking we do a couple of litters and recoup the money plus some. We have access to a registered male. She bought her, because he is "pretty". I want to monetize this error in judgement. She is registered and from good stock from what I understand. She is also too smart for her own good. The only dog I have ever seen that gets her toys out and plays and then puts them up.

Anybody have experience with these dogs?

I have a mini Aussie. I adopted mine when she was 10 mos. old and despite me getting her for free I know the original owner paid ridiculous money for her. The market has only gotten better in the past 8 years since from my knowledge. I empathize with your monetary decision.

As for the dog, if you can make it through the first 16 months or so until she gets her brains back, she'll be the best dog you've owned. So smart and loyal to a fault. Minds like none other and is always ready to do what you need/ask her to do.

Mine as a humble brag...she's 8 now.

Fore warned is fore armed.

Find a poodle to breed her with and charge 2x what she paid for her! Mini ausidoodle!

Should have gotten a full size model vs a freakishly bred midget.

Just kidding. Enjoy your new best friend.

We breed and show and train collies, my wife's hobbies though I do my share of support work. We've done a few puppy litters, with careful testing for genetic issues with pairings and careful selection. Of crosses and lots of testing and vet support and with health testing and certs on the pups since some of them will be show or competition quality, and we lose a ton of expense money on each litter. Asking $5-600 a pup like we have doesn't come close to covering the actual cost. It's a hobby though and to keep your breed line going you have to foot the bill for a litter now and then.

Unless we got run over on this one, the going rate for these pups is $1000-$1200. She was the last one they had and they were going to keep this one for their own. (She still answers to both names) We got her for $800. We are friends with the family (My son plays baseball with their son). They sell about 2-3 litters a year.

I just don't see how there is a market for what I see as basically a companion dog at that rate. I have to admit, she is a great dog, but I am not happy with paying $800 much less someone who paid $1200.

She is a blue Merle with two of the weird colored eyes if that means much. (Looks almost exactly like the one above although he has been groomed now)

Oh wow one of these on a leash. It is like the battle of Hue when we try to put ours on a leash. Has to be one of the smartest, set in her ways, hard headed beasts that I have ever seen.

She loves socks. She does not chew them up, she just carries them around and puts them in her toy bucket. If we are missing a sock, we know where to look. Also, she heels our Dalamation which is hilarious. I think she does it to aggravate him.

People pay a lot more than $1000 for some breeds these days. It's pretty crazy, but to get something with predictable behavioral traits and size and temperament, people will pay quite a bit. Think about how much a pet owner might invest in their dog in a 10-15 year lifespan?

Do a little search on "XXXdoodles". 1500-1800 for a mutt. Those people are crazy. Especially Labdoodles. I mean you are breeding two dogs with almost identical traits. What are you gaining?

Well, I live in Pleasanton. I dont see a lot of people running around with $1200 dogs. May have to tap into the San Antonio market.

I work at a vet clinic and every time I see one come into the clinic I know it's about to be a rodeo. They are a pain to mess with. There's always exceptions, but it seems like the majority of the time they do not like to be messed with. That goes for all Aussies, not just the designer breed.

We had about a 20 lber that wanted to eat anyone that looked at it come in the other day. It was the coolest puppy but I guess it wasn't socialized. Looked like a baby opossum as a pup.

Was drug into the same by my wife - might be the coolest dog we have ever had. Definitely the smartest - and I don't mean just obey commands good, I mean do the algebra to calculate what it will take to get that toy off the top of the frig smart. I could go on - great dog. On the breeding side be careful about breeding with another Merle (I think), chance of blind pups? Just ask around and be careful

This right here. Please don't breed your dog just to make some money. That ends up being detrimental for the breed.

I'm fully prepared to pay $2000-2500 for a Czech line German Shepherd when my current two dogs pass on. This includes health and temperament guarantees. It's worth it to be as sure as possible a dog I have for a large part of my life will be stable and able to participate in everything I do.

Yeah my 7 year old mini Aussie is dog aggressive. Smart dog but seems to think he is a human at this point... sigh.

I am not thinking about starting a puppy mill here! I have some family members who want one and the breeder even suggested it and the stud to breed to. With my luck, I will end up with at least half the litter still at my house because, "Oh they are so cute, we cant let them go!"

I had a great dog right after graduation. Such a good dog, that we got a female to breed him with so that I could have one of his pups. We had family members lined up to take the rest of the litter. The female has the litter and guess what! The last one of his pups died about 6 months ago at the ripe old age of 16. We didn't get rid of any of them. My backyard is like a cemetery with all the buried dogs and concrete grave covers. That's how my life works.

I don't have any new pics. They were welped at my parents and they being brought to me this weekend. I'll get some pics and put them up in due time.
But the natural instinct for working and intelligence is very strong with this breeding. We used the same male as last year and eveyone I have spoken to raves about how smart they are. As well the sire is large and the pictures I have seen have shown that these get a little larger framed than most standard aussies. D
