I'm wanting to put together a white water rafting trip for 5-6 guys. We'll be driving from North Texas and aren't very experienced, but are looking for a good challenge.

What are some good places to go?
What is the best time of year to go?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.
TIA!

Where in north Texas? Big bend has some good rapids and very beautiful scenery.

Depends on how far you want to go.

Taos would probably be closest.

Canon City or Buena Vista Colorado would also be good places to look.

Driving to Colorado is no problem.

Here's a picture of Big Bend. It looks legit.

However if you are willing to drive to Colorado, I'm sure you can get much better.

The Arkansas in Colorado is pretty fun, but I would suggest a multiday trip in utah on the green or yampa

Don't have any location recommendations but I went on the Clackmas river in Oregon last year during a work conference up there. Amazing experience and in the top 10 most fun things I've ever done.

The Ocoee in Tennessee has some good rapids.

The lower box on the Rio Grande outside of Taos or the "race course" near Pilar, NM just downstream are both great options within easy reach. Best time is late spring for good flows with the snow melt.

Usually around Mother's Day weekend has great flows.

Definitely second Buena Vista or the Animas outside of Durango, CO

South Fork Payette River, Idaho or if you have a week I would highly recommend Middle Fork Salmon River, Idaho.

If you make it up to Oregon, my husband is a whitewater guide. Could at the very least provide some great recommendations. We also did 7 days on the middle fork of the salmon this summer -- epic trip!

Pushing the boundaries of your trip, but spent a day last year on the Kicking Horse near Golden, British Columbia. INCREDIBLE. JUST. DO. IT!

Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge, Canon City, CO.

I second royal gorge.

I'll second Canyon City, CO. We rafted down Arkansas River by Royal Gorge and it was definitely scary fun. Believe the rapids there were considered Class 4/5. I'd highly recommend it.

The consensus appears to be the Arkansas in Colorado. I was there this summer and used an outfitter out of Buena Vista. There are more options in Buena Vista than in Canon City. In BV, there are three stretches of river that range from class II to Class III-IV. The stretch of river called The Numbers is class III-IV+ and can get hairy. The Royal Gorge trip out of Canon City is class III-IV, too, but probably shades a bit towards class III because, though the water is big, there's little technical skill necessary to navigate the rapids.

Rapids classification is based both on the size of the rapid and the technical skill needed to safely navigate the river. There's much, much, much bigger water somewhere like on the Kennebec River in Maine during big seasonal releases but the rapids are only class III because they're pretty straightforward. The Colorado through the Grand Canyon, too.

A commercial outfitter will rarely (never?) advertise and a stretch of river as class V and won't take commercial trips down water that big. They can't get insurance for class V commercial operations. The risk of loss is too great for most insurers of commercial rafting companies.

You'll get gorgeous views on the Royal Gorge trip and more thrills on The Numbers. I guarantee you that someone in your party, if you're a novice rafter, will swim The Numbers and it won't be pretty. If you're the one in the boat, it's hilarious. If you're the poor guy swimming, it's awful.

And just to make sure, get a guide and go through a legitimate outfitter. Do not attempt to raft alone. Bad things will happen. I've seen more than one private party trip with novice rafters have to be airlifted from the side of the river. The cost of an outfitter and gratuity is much, much less than a helicopter extraction.

Look no further than the Gauley river in the fall in West Virginia. Does not get any better. Check out ace adventures.

I've also done both the upper and lower new river in West Virginia with ace adventures in the summer and they were a lot of fun.

Both legit. I've done the South Fork. I have not done the Salmon but I personally know several folks that have done it. They loved it. There is a draw system on the Middle Fork of the Salmon to limit the number of people keep the crowds down so the experience is nature, not people. The guiding companies get some permits so if you reserve with them you are good to go.

Did the upper Animas out of Durango, CO
Wow!!! What a trip....class 3s throughout and Two class 5 runs. Lost the guide on the last 5 as he flew out past us into the river....holy Chit I had pucker factor on that slat.

The Beauty of that area is top notch!

Gauley is insane.

If you just wanna get wet occasionally and catch a **** ton of smallmouth... I have some ideas.

Oh yeah... most raft guides are total outdoor hippie dirtbags who are probably still drunk from PBR and Rainier beer and live in the bed of their truck.

On second thought...damn that sounds like a good life

x10 for Animas during spring flows. Google videos of the Animas River Days. Durango and the surrounding area are spectacular. Or you could do the Buffalo River in Arkansas.

It really is. Going for round 2 this fall! I guess our group didn't get enough near death experiences for only one year to satisfy us...

I'll second the Gauley in WV. ~18hr drive. Damn near drowned rafting that in Oct a few years ago. Their set up is built for consistent white water and it is absolutely nuts. Most Texans look west for rafting, but the Appalachians have a few honey holes in WV & PA that will humble you.
