The overpriced/under performing "maintenance contract" so many counties require (via state law) can now be avoided, at least in counties enlightened enough to not allow the fleecing of their residents.

Agrilife aerobic class

"This course is intended for homeowners interested in gaining knowledge in the operation and maintenance of their onsite wastewater treatment system. The course consists of classroom lecture and discussion, plus hands-on demonstrations and tour of the onsite wastewater training center located near the classroom."

How can you find out what counties allow this option? My parents are in Montgomery County and would probably love to avoid the maintenance contract if it's an option.

Not sure if a statewide list of counties accepting self-maintenance is available. A call to to the applicable county Health Department may be the only way to find out (assuming you reach a competent spokesperson).

A little more info...TCEQ

Did this in Denton County. Easy to maintain as the systems are not that complex. Reminds me I need to turn in my December inspection report.

Can I avoid paying and avoid taking a class to do what takes my guy 40 seconds?

I don't need an all day course drawing out the process.

I do all of my own maintenance now. The only thing I don't do if poke a stick in to check the **** level and write it on a door hanger and fill out some docs for the paper pushers to stay in a job.

Same here. The whole system of needing to report just irks me to no end. Basically a selective tax.

I build poo plants for a living, operating or maintaining a septic tank is nothing, and I shouldn't have to pay $400 a year or take a $100 class and do paperwork.

Where do you find out if your county will allow it? Where is all of the pertinent information for this? Do we have to call the county? Is it a ONE TIME thing or is there some catch about having to renew every year?

I found this: http://www.co.waller.tx.us/page/enviornment

(Yes, I realize that the county has officially misspelled 'environment' in their own link)

Near the bottom of the page there is a 'regulations' tab with a PDF. On Section 10b of that PDF it says:

Quote:

Homeowner maintenance of any secondary treatment system shall not be allowed unless the homeowner has proof that he/she has been trained by the manufacturer/installer or is a maintenance provider that is licensed/certified or has taken a training course apprived by Waller County under TCEQ guidelines.

This was adopted December of 2017. So...does this mean that this class may allow me to do my own maintenance?

My county allows it!

Dude comes out for $450 and shows everything you need on site real quick and you get certified.

Expensive but he'll that pay for itself quickly. Still sucks I have to do it at all but at least I don't have to sit in class all day I guess.
