long range AR-15/AR-10 recipe

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I just found out a local group here has a monthly 3 gun match. I've always wanted to give this a try. However one difference I noticed is that the group seems to have much longer shots than what I've typically heard about in a 3 gun match. The range they use can go o 1200 yards, and 600-800 yards is very very common.

This sounds like a great excuse to buy a new toy. So my question for the OB board AR gurus, I'd like to spend somewhere around $2000 on the gun, another grand on the scope. What would you recommend

What caliber on an ar 15 platform?
Which one on the AR10?

Now there is no way I'm going to be competitive, and any gun in this price range will be much more accurate than I am. So if I can get 90% of the performance for 60% of the cost, that's what I'm looking for. I know in most things you can spend stupid dollars getting the ideal setup, where one that costs half as much get's you 90% of the way there.

So, besides the caliber options, what else should I be looking at? I'm pretty uneducated on guns as a whole. I built one ar-15 as sort of a bucket list check off, so I know the most basics only.

I'm not the expert you are looking for, but if I had that kind of money for a new "toy" this is where I would go.

AR10 in 6.5CM. Savage has a really nice model that I'm itching to buy.

That seems extremely far for a 3-gun competition. All the ones I have seen max at only a few hundred yards. Most guys run .223 for caliber. That should plink consistent at 700.

Note: Other experiences will vary.

Just had one of our AR10s in 308 come back in on a trade in. Dude is moving to Idaho and needs a boltaction so traded it in towards a Sendero. He paid a little over 2k for the rifle, we've got it up at $1400 for Texags. 18" HBar from ballistic, magpul PRS stock, upgraded trigger, ergo brand grip, keymod freefloat, aero lower and our billet upper. Has a bipod. Sweet setup all the way around.

Maybe someone else can chime in. I don't think any runs an AR-10 for 3-Gun. Way more weight and less mag capacity.

AR-15 in 5.56 should be capable to 700 or 800 if you are.

I saw the 6.5 creed and immediately went to AR10 mode. Yeah, I wouldn't run an AR10 for 3 Gun. We do have a 3 gun rifle built up already on the armadillo platform that is pretty sweet or we can do a grendel or spc if you want something a little longer range than a 5.56.

Oh, and I have a proof research carbon fiber barrel in grendel in stock that would be awesome on a 3gun build.... just saying.

Almost don't know why you wouldn't go with a Grendel in this situation.

LaRue is a good choice. If you want it put together they have that option or you can save yourself some serious money and assemble it yourself by picking there ultimate upper kit. 5.56 will work but you are going to start to max out it's capabilities with the distance you listed.

Have you gone to a match to talk to some of the better shooters and find out what they're using? That's where I'd start.

Yeah I saw the same thing. Grendel is my new favorite toy.

Go watch a match or two and browse the equipment being used.
