How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey all,

I'm looking to buy my dad an exotic hunt for his 60th birthday coming up next September and am looking for recommendations for a nice, respectable place with good animals to take him. I'm not quite certain what kind of game yet as it'll most likely depend on the price but probably axis, red stag, fallow, etc. I'd like to stay in Texas but that isn't set in stone.

Thanks!

Their website says hunts are in feeding areas so game will be where you want it to be. How exactly is that hunting?

Do we really have to have this come up on every single thread like this.

It's an exotics ranch in Texas, what do you expect?

Yes, it is high fenced and there are blinds set up overlooking either food plots or feeders. Bow blinds are also on the property. All of the animals have the run of the place so it is at least not as if the axis pen is over here, the fallow pen is over here etc. I know it is not everyone's preferred way of hunting but it fits a need.

I couldn't say enough good things about the family that owns and runs the ranch along with the property.

Honestly I'm not making any judgment. There's obviously a market and hat's off to anyone making a dollar off it.

I was asking if people consider this hunting. Personally I don't.

There's another thread where a poster talks about going on an exotic hunt with his dad and taking a couple of animals. I'm sure he had a great time but I'm familiar with that particular place which has 200 acres and you can see the town square from it. The place is so overrun with animals they all come to feed like like a bunch of number 2 Okies.

Just FYI, the Escondido is a well managed ranch in the hill country. It has around 1800 acres and has 2 miles of the Johnson Fork Creek traversing it. The headwaters of Johnson Fork are on the Moody Ranch adjacent to the YO. Over the years the YO's exotics have gotten out through water gaps during flooding and the Johnson Fork Creek river bottom is flush with all kinds of exotics that have been roaming freely for years. The Escondido does do whitetail breeding but the hunting is not a canned hunt.

Edit: Just a quick edit to say that I have guided hunters on the Escondido which is where my knowledge of the place comes from.

Google doesn't help me and I feel like I need to know what "#2 Okies" are for future reference...

Give Bobby Grieger a call (+1 (254) 495-0799) with G Ranch Outfitters. He has several ranches in the Waco area and has exceptional animals. My dad and I just got back from hunting with him and I have nothing but great things to say. He will work his butt off to get you a great trophy.

Here are our two animals.

"No offense, but"
Pretty sure the OP asked for recommendations on a place to go, not whether Jja79 determines it worthy of being designated as a hunt. I would venture a guess that the OP couldn't care less about your opinion.

I'm sure he doesn't. I asked an honest question, nothing more. I don't consider a 200 acre place where the animals come to feed to be a hunt. As I said there's a market for it so good for those that can sell it.

I'm the poster you're referring to. I will tell you that your information on the ranch is correct, including the beautiful view of the town square at night, but the animals most definitely don't parade in to the feeder. Some do come in without any worry, but the trophy mature animals were very weary of the feeder which made bowhunting them very hard. I switched to a rifle for my auodad and even then he wasn't just making the hunt easy. Amazing how people just make broad assumptions and then think everyone should feel the same way.

I take it, you hunt with a spear dressed in a loin cloth?
Camo is cheating, scoped rifle is cheating, range finders are cheating, etc., etc.
Hunting is hunting and what you make of it. I just wish my dad was still able to go hunting. Dementia is a *****.

HCHunter,
Does your dad live in Corpus or is he in the San Antonio area. Just asking because he is the spitting image of a guy I know well at church in Bulverde.

No...he is from Victoria.

Making a judgment is exactly what you are doing.
