I have had deer get in the trap but was always able to get them out. My father and I got to talking. What are the legal requirements if one get hung up or stressed and dies?

Can't answer your question but my buddy swears by running a fishing line across the bottom of the entrance. He says the deer will not enter and the pigs don't care.

He started doing this after the third deer was trapped and none since.

I always put a little diesel on the corn in/around the trap. Hogs don't seem to care and haven't caught a deer.

Call the game warden. They will likely ask if you want the meat and if you do, they can send you paperwork so you don't use your own tag.

I know this works in other circumstances when deer get trapped in fences or hurt or hit by cars... shouldn't be different here unless you're trapping is somehow deemed negligent.

I found hanging a string across the opening that will hit their back keeps deer out, pigs don't seem to mind.

My grandfather told me about a guy he knew that shot a young buck that got in one of his. A game warden jag straddled it out and saw him do it. He got in big trouble.

Using corn with diesel will not exclusively keep deer out of a trap. Don't ask how I know.

Dunno but one of the saddest days I've had was when we caught a young 8 point in ours and while we were able to get him out successfully...he had messed up his face pretty bad from ramming the side of the cage.

Time to redo your hog traps. We used box traps for a long time but we caught a bunch of deer and just didn't like it.

Find a shady spot and build a hog trap with t-posts and hog panel in the shape of an ellipse. We buried the hog panel 4-6 inches in the ground. Cut the back of your hog trap off and cut a corresponding hole in the panel.

For a trigger mechanism I have a rod in the ground with a piece of paracord going to the trap, the cord goes up some pullies, and tied off to the trap. At the top of the trap is a compound bow trigger.

This works best with a downward falling door. But run a cable from the door and make a loop that will fit in the bow trigger.

Now the premise is the pigs enter the trap and hit the paracord. When they hit the paracord that will put pressure on the trigger of the bow trigger causing it to release the cable, now you have a larger group of pigs caught.

We have a "door" cut into the side of the trap that is removable. This let's us get inside to bait and set the trap. The open top let's deer jump out, but run some hardware cloth about a foot down across the top to keep them from catching a back leg in the panel

They key to a good hog trap is to make the entrance small. You want to limit the height and width. You don't want the big boars, sows, or deer in there. The best eating are the 75 lb ones anyway.

depends on the goal of the trap

herd reduction or eating

True and good point. I've only ever trapped to eat.

Same here. We built our trap too big and ended up having to put a 2x4 across the entrance about 24" above ground. It worked flawlessly for years until last weekend. I hate freeing deer trapped in a cage. We were able to get it out without it suffering too much damage but time will tell. We are probably going to switch to a circular/tear drop design without a top to prevent this in the future.
