I had a gunsmith tell me this. He sells RPRs (Ruger Precision Rifle - $1600) and said that essentially the RPR and the American use the same barrel with some modifications. The real difference between the two guns is the stock.

He said, "Now that Magpul is coming out with a stock for the American, you can have a gun that shoots RPR level accuracy for under $1k." What is OB's perspective on this?

I have a Ruger American for me and one for my kids and love the gun and was probably going to get the Magpul stock for me.

here is link for Magpul Stock - LINK

Similar, maybe, but I doubt the barrel quality is the same between the two. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but I would think they hold the RPRs to much higher QC in regards to the barrels.

I wouldn't call them the same but I would not be shocked if a RAR put into a Magpul stock shot as well or close to as well as a RPR.

I own two RAR, one in .270 and one in 7.62x39 that hasn't been shot yet. The .270 groups 5 rounds from .75-1.25 usually with PPU soft points.

The two real big issues with the RAR that a Magpul stock would fix are:

1. Even though RARs are supposed to be free floated from the factory a lot of times they aren't. Usually the barrel isn't centered in the stock. All it takes is removing the action screws and paying close attention to the barrel as you replace the action screws. Basically it looks like the guys in the factory get the barrel in correct but don't realize it gets pulled slightly right when they torque the action down.

2. The fore end on the RAR is pretty flimsy and touches the barrel if using a bipod without paying attention to that.

There's lots of ways to get that kind of accuracy for under $1000. Lots of accurate bolt action rifles on the market these days.

I'll let you know as soon as the Magpul stock ships. I've had one ordered since September. 2 Nov was supposed to be the release date, but now it's "undetermined".

Seems a little high... the delta probably isn't as bad as he's making it seem. You can prob get em (RPR) cheaper than that... right? Eyeguy?
