GRHRCH Chief MH MHR OCH10,14 and HRCH Ariel

Chief is the 2nd of only 4 Boykins to obtain his Grand Hunting Retriever Champion title. A 2-time Boykin National Open Retriever Champion. Only Boykin to ever pass the AKC Master Nationals in 2012. Went 6/6 in AKC Master Retriever Tests. Chief also has the most HRC Points of any breed of currently living retrievers, with over 3,000 points (3rd all-time). Chief's track record in the field speaks for itself. He is also a proven stud, having produced 5 HRCH titles, 2 AKC Master Hunter Retriever titles, and most recently, one of his offspring (Leine) passed the HRC Fall Grand. Ariel is a 2-time Boykin National Retriever Finalist in the Open class, with her best finish a 3rd place in 2016 at the Open. She also has an Intermediate Retriever JAM at the Boykin National. A consistent performer, she has competed in 5 stakes over 4 years at the Boykin Retriever National, and has been to the final series in 4 out of the 5 stakes entered. Completed 2 series in 2016 Spring HRC Grand. 4 AKC Master Retriever passes earned to date, needs 2 more to title. Ariel's puppy (Flynn) at the 2017 Boykin National in the Puppy Class took 2nd place after turning just 6 months old the day of the field trial. Ariel is out of 4-time Boykin National Champion HRCH Justahomewrecker PCH05 UICH06 NCH06 UOCH08 and Remington Steele (direct relative to HRCH Roscoe and HRCH Boy). Ariel was the first Boykin from Texas to earn her HRCH and is still the only female boykin in Texas with this title. Ariel is amateur handled by myself.

Chief is a Collie Eye (CEA) Carrier, and Ariel is All-Clear. Litter will be tested for CEA prior to going out to homes. Not taking any more names for female puppies at this time, only males. Can someone tell me their personal experiences with this breed? I've been wanting to go golden retriever, but these are some nice looking dogs.

How big do they get on average for male/female?
How good are they on ducks/dove?
Are they good around other dogs?
Are they good indoor and outdoor?
Any medical issues common with them?
Do they like to run off or are they pretty loyal and obedient?
Does grooming suck and need to be done a lot?
Any other good info?

Good talking to you over the phone last night. I probably answered most of your questions last night, but I'll reply to these anyways.

How big do they get on average for male/female? Male standard is 30-40 lbs, females 25-35 lbs. My female weighs 38 lbs and the sire we bred to is 40 lbs.

How good are they on ducks/dove? Excellent! Its what they were bred for! They may even surprise you in bringing back a goose!
Are they good around other dogs? Yes, boykins have very playful temperaments.
Are they good indoor and outdoor? Like with any working breed, if you don't give it adequate exercise, jobs, tasks, they will find something else to do! That being said, both Ariel and Chief are great indoor dogs. Being both trained by amateur owners, they have always been family dogs. Their compact size makes them fun to let them be in your lap on the couch, in the front seat of the truck, or in the boat! They are commonly referred to as "the dog that doesn't rock the boat"!
Any medical issues common with them? YES! But thanks to responsible breeding/genetic testing, we are testing for these genetic diseases to prevent them from occurring in our dogs. Do they like to run off or are they pretty loyal and obedient? Very loyal and obedient, Boykins tend to get very attached to their owners. But just like with any other breed, some can be more independent than others. Thats what training is for!
Does grooming suck and need to be done a lot? This varies from Boykin to Boykin. Some Boykins get a very thick curly coat. Others have a nice smooth straight/wavy coat (like Ariel and Chief) that is very low maintenance. Pictures of Sire/Dam will tell you what coat you'll get off the puppies.
Any other good info? Be careful, once you get one you'll want another!!!

Awesome! Thanks for all the info and glad to be on the list! I've talked to a few friends that either have them or have friends that have them and I'm yet to hear anything negative on Boykins. There's a ton of comments on TBH about them so that was good to see too. Being big into duck hunting (and dove when we actually have some), it'll be nice not having to be my own retriever one day.

Hopefully everything goes well this weekend and she gets knocked up!
