Anyone have suggestions of trainers local to BCS? Got a three year old lab been through basic training. Doubles, blind retrieves, out to a good distance. Just wanting to get her casting training.

Thanks OB

Are you sending her somewhere or just looking for pointers to DIY?

Rody Best at Best Retrievers did a great job on my dog. He's an Ag. Not in CS but it's only an hour away in Paige

If you are wanting to get her in with a trainer right now, Rody Best or Kirk Wichman are both solid trainers, relatively close to BCS. Adam Bally is a great trainer from Wisconsin who winters down here. I think he usually gets here around mid to late Oct.

Casting is usually not that difficult to teach if the dog already has the basics you mentioned. If you have the desire to do it yourself, join the Bryan College Station Retriever club and get help from some of the members. I am in BCS, I use Evan Grahm's Smart Works training program. I will lend you the manuals and DVDs if you like. Shawn@kelsoarms.com

Kirk at Hidden Lake Retrievers. 25 minutes from College Station. Both my dog and Reddog90's dogs went through his program and continue to work with him. He does great work.

I originally was planning on sending her to a trainer for a few months. But am up for trying it myself. I have land to do it on. Just not the knowledge.

She did pretty well for her first hunts this early teal season. Doing doubles and blind retrieves. Even chasing down a wounded duck that tried flying away. Fun to watch for sure.

If I send her it'll be after big duck season.

Thanks for the help!

I found casting pretty easy to teach. I also used Smart Works. Between "baseball " and "double T's" the dog picked it up quickly. We would just go to the back yard for 5 minutes each evening and do the baseball drill. Double T's were a couple times a week at the park on a football field.
