There are big deer there. They post pictures of them on Facebook.

I think Log knows the area pretty well

When the road sign says 4-wheel drive only they mean it. Also handy to have the number to whomever is overseeing the hunt.

Have hunted the surrounding country all my life, but have never been lucky enough to draw matador. I didn't draw whitetail, will have to wait until next month to see about muledeer (very low odds to draw that tag).

My advice would be to get to high points and glass as much as possible. The muledeer will be in the hills and cedar. The whitetails will mainly stick to the mesquite flats. Focus on mesquite for the whitetail.

good luck!

Yep, I've hunted there several times. Twice when it was still open under the APH permit for archery deer, and I've been drawn for a buck hunt and an antlerless hunt.

Here's my buck hunt. If you use Chrome or Firefox, there are add-ons for Photobucket that will display the pics. Haven't found one for IE yet.

The NW section of the area is low canyon type country. More muleys in this area, but there are also whitetail. The whitetails tend to hang out on the southern and NE side of the area, as well as along the river. Also, bordering the west and NW side of the WMA is a huge winter wheat field, assuming it has been planted. There are deer over there pretty consistently, and they come off of the WMA.

The problem with the areas outside of the NW section is that it is hard to get up high enough above the brush to see much. Lots of low brush, so plan accordingly, depending on what compartment you are hunting.

Shoot me your current email and I will send you a link to a MyTopo map I created of the area.
