Gentlemen I need to ship a black powder gun from NM to NC. Any words of advice would be much appreciated.

My understanding is if has a removable breach plug, it's considered a firearm and must be transferred via FFL. If it doesn't have a removable breach plug and can't be modified to a regular firearm, ship away. I had a Thompson Center Thunderhawk shipped from Texas up to Ohio by my brother. I checked with a FFL first and they stated it wasn't considered a firearm, as CS78 stated. Eyeguy or someone else can confirm.

Not a firearm. Ship as you would anything else.
This is why it may not matter that it is legal. I don't have time to debate some USPS official. It isn't a firearm? Of course it isn't - to you. But to the dude at the counter..Horse with No Name said:
It is completely legal to ship them, and I have zero indication that a removable breech plug has any impact. I have been on the receiving end of a Knight muzzleloader and shipped an 1848 musket. Both were sent via US postal service.
That said, I would advise that you not to mention the contents to the person at the counter. My dad was too chatty when he tried to ship the first time--the USPS guy was emphatic that it was illegal and almost started a ****storm. After leaving and being reassured that it was legal, he sent the package with my much less talkative mother, and she had no problems.
