Because forges are outdoor things...

For those of you who enjoy the Forged in Fire show on the History Channel, last Tuesdays episode featured Don Halter, '93.

During the show, he created a dagger (using the given supplies of ball bearings and fish hooks), then won the competition with a Gladiator's Scissor.

Is that from this Season. Always thought the new episodes were on tonight, and I thought I've seen every one, but don't remember him or a canister build

A friend will be on in about 4 weeks. He works at A&M and lives in College Station.

I don't have an exact air date just now.

They made me take my 12th Man towel off the wall in the garage and put little strips of tape over every brand name visible on equipment and even spray paint cans. I wasn't allowed to mention any university by name in the interviews either.

I should have painted the side of my anvil maroon and white!

Thanks for the congrats!

Yes, they limit us to 45 hours. We fly back from New York and a film crew meets us at our house the next morning. We get 5 hours the first day, and 10 hours each the next 4 days. They take a picture of your item each evening to make sure you aren't working on it after hours.

I stopped early most days and finished almost a day early (just sharpened and did some cut tests the last day), so we had a pretty relaxed time.

Round 1&2 are filmed over three days up in the Bronx. We had to bring three sets of identical clothes. They have a "dirt makeup" girl who takes pictures the end of each day and puts the "dirt" back on us each morning so it looks continuous.

Wow I did not know the first and second rounds were on different days. I never would have guessed. After you won did you get to hang out with the judges?

We were the last filming session before the judges got a two week break. That had been filming straight for 45 days. They hung out with us for 30 min then took off. I was hoping to go grab a beer or two with them later.

day 1: Pick up at hotel about 7 am. Safety briefing and set tour after initial interview and schedule briefing. Then film us walking out on set to forging stations, back to ready room, back out for filming of "big reveal of what we'll be doing". Back to ready room for explanation of rules, signing of rule acknowledgement, then back out to film design period. Break for late lunch then go out and film round one. Come back for interviews. Back to hotel about 7:30 pm.

Day 2: Get back into dirty clothes, get dirt make up applied, schedule briefing, sit around and wait, finally out for first elimination. Back to ready room, explanation of round two rules, sit around and wait some more, lunch then round two. More interviews, etc, etc.

Day 3: Blade testing done first part of morning, Alf kicked off for not following rules that were explained at least four times. Lunch, then reveal of final round requirements, rules briefing/signing on final round requirements. More interviews, back to hotel by 6.

Fly home following morning with completely screwball flight schedule arranged by set staff. Following day film crew arrives at house and we start the home shop portion. I box up item at the end of that and film crew ships it back. They gave us some metal plus a $200 spending allowance to create final item.

Fly back two weeks later and film final round. We actually had a half day to go hand out in NY this trip!

We were original episode 13 set to air June 25th. They kept altering air dates and schedule and added in mid-season break so we got changed to episode 15 and aired Aug 8. My check got mailed the morning after it aired. Jason got his weapon retuned that week as well. Runner up gets weapon back now. They keep everything else.

That's pretty much it in a nut shell!

Yes, even Hensley's head would not stand up to the scissor! Is this JW?

I could have saved them and myself some money and just worn the same set of clothes 3 days straight.

I heard they each get a handler that follows them everywhere they go while they're in New York, even into the bathroom. They also had to sign a big ass confidentiality agreement.

Is this the same show that Richard Epting, of College Station, has been on. Not sure if he's an Agg but he's lived in CS a long time.

Hope all y'all had great holidays! I entered a knifemaking competition recently and could use a little voting help! Maybe get all your friends, coworkers, family, family pets...anyone with a facebook account! hah!

It's pretty much turned into a facebook popularity contest and has virtually nothing to do with knifemaking skills. I have over 150 hour into mine, the other was pretty much about 20 hours of just grinding one from a bar of spring steel.

Just "like the linked post, and comment with the word "vote" in the comments! I would greatly appreciate it!

Knife voting link

Voting ends Monday the 6th at midnight.

Thanks,
Don '91
