We have a bunch of 300lb Sweeney feeders and they are getting old and we are having to fix them as they break. The motors are also a pain in the butt to work on.

Has anybody put one of the bottom mount motor units on one? Since they have the internal funnel my thoughts are getting an under mount unit and bolting it in to the bottom. This would make the control box, motor, and timer more accessible.

Thanks guys for your help.

And yes, I love LAMCO feeders but it just ain't in the cards to buy a new $700 feeder.

One thing to consider is the part of the feeder where it meets the plate is a square. So I think that's going to limit me to a product with a round plate.

Photos would be helpful. Not familiar with that feeder.

Fishin - I've converted Sweeney feeders with bottom spin plates a number of times. We have used the Wildgame boxes and just mounted them to the bottom with self tapping screws or run the screw into the current timer box with lock washers. Either way, it works like a charm and you get to continue to utilize one of the better made corn boxes out there.

As for the plate, it really doesn't matter as long as you have adjustable mounting arms to be able to slide the plate up or down to get the right amount of corn flow to the plate. If you have to much gap, then you'll have spillage via wind, birds, etc. To little gap, corn doesn't feed well. Hope that helps.

this is the feeder. the box has a small door on the side that houses red wasps and yellow jackets the feeder controller and battery. the metal box has an internal funnel which gives room for the controller and battery. a small 2.5 x 2.5 inch protrudes from the bottom. the motor is mounted on a bracket inside the feeder (so its amongst the corn) and the motor has a short shaft which an extension is bolted onto and the cup/plate is then held on by a lock nut. the feeder has small legs that go into old drill stem pipe (sold separately) to put it up in the air.

to replace the motor you have to take the deer down, crawl inside a sheet metal box, unbolt the motor, bolt the new motor on, and then put the feeder back up.

an issue ive ran into in the past is since the protrusion on the bottom of the feeder is square the spinner plate had to be round or the spinner plate would be beating against the sides of the protrusion of the feeder.

As was said above, you should be able to easily retrofit that with an external control box. The adjustable brackets on any unit should allow the unit to be attached with self tapping screws and easily clear the corn spout you are talking about. As long as you have the proper clearance, I'm not sure why round vs square would matter, but you can certainly either buy a control unit with a round plate, or just buy a separate round plate (they are cheap).

We sell WGI, Everlast and All Season 12V control units, all less than $100 for the box, motor, and timer.
