6 month old beagle pup. He loves sneaking into the bathroom and grabbing Qtips out of the trashcan. Over the past few months I've pulled several out of his throat.

Tonight I guess he finally got one down all the way. A little while after he ate his dinner he started yelling for no reason. Several minutes later he barfed up all his food and there was also what appeared to be the cotton from a Qtip but no stick. He's yelped for no apparent reason a couple more times after that while lying on his bed.

If he did swallow the stick is their any way he could eventually pass it?

Is it a plastic stick or the paper/cardboard type?

Paper stick kind. He's thrown up twice since I made the OP. He's snoozing on the couch right now. Before that he seemed really restless like he couldn't get comfortable.

The paper ones are less likely to perforate anything, and may soften up or dissolve enough in the stomach to pass. Let him rest tonight, but if he is still uncomfortable or vomiting in the morning a trip to the EC is in order

But if he starts gagging or throwing up any blood tonight don't wait until tomorrow.

Ok it looks like I was mistaken. My wife & daughter cleaned up his first vomit and they said they saw the Qtip cotton. I took their word for it. Last night he threw up some more of it and I'm almost positive that its the stuffing of a cushion from our patio furniture. I found one of them with a hole in it and some of the filler scattered around the patio. I think he ate enough of it to create a blockage though because if he eats or drinks anything it comes back up later. Our vet is open on Saturday's so I'm gonna take him in for a visit.

That polypropylene stuffing poses more danger than the qtip.

They'll typically pass or throw that up, but something like stuffing doesn't degrade much if at all in the gut so it poses more risk for blockage/obstruction (imo)

My dachshund has probably eaten an entire box of q-tips in the 7 years we've had him... He's still alive and kicking.

I've removed several "used" tampons from a dogs small bowel over the years, it's even nastier when it's inside a dogs gut!!

Glad you are taking him in. Keep us posted on the outcome. Good luck!

Vet is keeping him to do X-rays and observation. He was feeling good enough this morning that he is his normal quirky self, this is how he rode to the vet. But I could tell he's still not on his A-game.

I had a dog that would sneak into bathroom and eat all kinds of nappy stuff from trash can . I bought a mousetrap and "worked" the spring and bent the metal bar where it wouldn't snap all the way closed. Put on a glove to test it on my thumb and it didn't hurt too much. Then put keeenex (with bacon grease) under the vanity in the trash can. Waited bout an hour and heard the trap with Kleenex spring shut, immediately followed by his head hitting the bottom of vanity. Dog never "mealhounded" the bathroom trash for the rest of his life. May be worth a try...
