I'd like to add Norinco for a nice, low priced 1911A1 clone...if you can find them. I have one and love it.

At least 8-9 bills to start.

My first 1911 was a rock island and I've enjoyed that gun. I recently bought a smith and Wesson e-series 1911 and the rock island shoots as well as that does I think.

At one time you could get a Kimber Custom II for under $700 at Champion. My brother, cousin and I all have one and they've been great guns.

I'd be willing to bet you're going to see some crazy Black Friday 1911 deals this year.

You're in the market at the right time. Range Officer is a great start. Ruger Enhanced is a great value for the coin. I've become a huge fan of STI. The Trojan is an incredibly well refined 1911 for less $$ than it should cost.

I am a Springfield fan, the first handgun I bought was an XD and I have shot that gun a lot. I am still more accurate with that gun than any I own. My suggestion, if you decide to buy a Springfield, is make sure you get one while they have a promotion running. Right now you can get 4 extra mags, a mag clip and holster for free. The holster isn't good for much except for maybe mounting in your vehicle. They seem to run one of these at least once a year.

So, I have been looking at 1911's as well and am leaning toward something mid-level in price. I don't have any experience with one of these but I have been looking at the Springfield loaded model mainly for the ambi safety (lefty shooter) but it has a few other extras as well. I have seen this gun for around $800 but they are hard to find in stock. This is the gun I have been looking for:

My question for folks here with more experience is, how does this gun compare with the Range Officer? I keep hearing the Range Officer is a better shooter, should I just get a Range Officer and have an ambi safety installed instead?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

I've heard RO is a better pistol than the Loaded but I can't get past the blade rear sight on the RO. I've found that Harrison Custom makes a nice replacement rear sight.

Used Colt is the best bet, IMO

Dan Wesson's are good guns but I wouldn't really consider them high end.

The fit and finish on my Ed Brown is a cut above. IMO Dan Wesson's are upper mid range with Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, and Nighthawk solid choices in the high end.

I want this BCM Wilson Combat 1911.

I just don't have $3k to drop on it right now.

Colt. I can drive nails with that baby. Shot a perfect score on my CHL...

Looking at the Colt rail gun, it's a little more money but has an ambi safety and it's a Colt.

May be a better option for me.
