I'm in the market for a zero turn. Found a 2014 61" Scag Cheetah with about 300 hours on it, guy says he'll take $5K cash. Pics look immaculate, going to check it out tomorrow. I think new they are ~$9500, so that's almost half price.

What says OB? Awesome deal or no? I'm willing and able to work on stuff, so a brand new mower isn't 100% necessary.

I bought a 61" Scag Freedom Z new in 2015. It's only used for my lawn, so it just has 100ish hours on it, but it's still as good as brand new. The Cheetah is a heavier duty machine, so I would imagine you're good to go.

PS - If you're going to a zero-turn from a lawn tractor, get ready to be BLOWN AWAY.

Just sold my lawn tractor, but I've mowed a good bit with my FILs Scag Turf Tiger (the commercial machine). I've been kicking myself for 4 years for buying that damn Lowes POS Chinese John Deere. Not making that mistake again.

You mind me asking what you gave for your machine? Ballpark is fine, I'm mostly trying to see if the $5K is fair. Thanks for the feedback.

I've mowed quite a bit of grass working for mowing and landscaping companies throughout high school and college. John Deere zero turn mowers are much better quality than they used to be. However, scag still sits up at the top. I think $5k for that machine with 300 hours is fair. Scags will last for a long time. It really depends on how well he took care of it and how he used it. (Mowing business or just mowing his own yard)

The guy is telling me is was only personal use. The thing looks immaculate in the pics, so I think I believe him. Thanks for the response, good to hear Scag are on top, especially from a Pro. I looked a JD zero turn over recently, and I agree that they've improved a lot, but can't beat a SCag. The other mower I've been considering is a Bad Boy Maverick. That thing looks really nice for the money.

I think my 61" Freedom Z was something like $6800 before tax.

Even though the Freedom Z is the lower end of Scag's offering, there is still a HUGE difference between it and the zero turns my neighbors bought from the box stores. Tire size, HP, deck thickness, etc., etc. It adds up and makes a much nicer machine.

Kilgore. I talked to him and not getting a great feeling. This is a Craigslist deal and he's acting squirrelly. Tried to go look at it this afternoon and he called just before I got there saying his sister had been in a car accident. I feel bad if it's true, but it was weird. I'll probably end up buying a new ExMark or Bad Boy.

At the risk of having every bad boy owner on the OB attack me, I would be leery of their mowers. I've spoken with several people about their quality issues and a lot of their parts are not what one would expect on a commercial grade zero-turn (Chinese parts). Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge can weigh in on this. Hustler, Grasshopper, Gravely are all quality machines. But everybody likes what they gonna like.

Kubota Diesel?

That's is very tempting, and I've heard they are fantastic mowers. Not sure I want to switch to diesel though, just more fuel containers I have to keep full, or trailer the machine. Thanks for the heads up though.

That's good info. The poor quality parts is why I hated the john Deere. I went and looked at a neighbors ExMark Pioneer last night. The spindles are completely sealed and unserviceable and they don't offer the Kawasaki anymore for the Pioneers (and the Lazer Z models are probably way overkill). Other than that it's a very well built machine. Not really all that nervous about the non greasable spindles, by the motor gives be pause. The Kawasaki twin engines are like the Honda small engines.....you cant kill them, or that's what I'm hearing.

Anyone have a Kohler powered big mower that they've beat on? It's pretty telling that the lower end models all switch to Kohler....and the higher end all have Kawasaki.

Check out the Kubota 60" a poster has on TexAgs. Good price for a diesel low hours.

I picked up a scag freedom z 52" deck this fall. Only have 19 hours on it but it's been pretty great.

It has a Kohler 23 or 24 hp. Only hiccup I've had was a leaking fuel pump that was 5 minute swap. I asked the dealer if they offered a version with a Kawasaki, but he talked me out of it. Basically, if they run they run well, but if they go down warranty reps are nonexistent. Of course this just one shop's opinion.

I like their suspension setup. There is a dealer here in Longview, I may go peek at them on my lunch break.

Thanks for the input. I'm basing my Kawasaki bias on my FILs Scag. His mower is 10 years old, has 800 hours on it, an the engine has been Ultra-reliable. No issues at all. He not near as picky on servicing it as I would be either, but he does take pretty good care of it.

Mine is a Hustler SD Raptor 54" that I've owned for a couple years. Good machine, but it's the only one I've ever owned/operated. Saw an Ad for a new brand I hadn't seen before...Country Clipper...it's a zero turn, but uses a joystick instead of the steering type you are used to seeing on a ZTM

I'll most likely be purchasing that same Hustler mower myself soon.

Go with a diesel or go home! Once you go there you will never go back to gas and all its issues.

I have experience with 2 different 60" Kubota diesel ZTR. Both garbage and I wouldn't own one. I also love the Kawasaki v-twin engines. I have ever had good experiences with Scag, Bad Boy, and Bob Cat.

Love my scag freedom z 52". Although I only have 130 hours. Bought it new nearly 4 years ago for maintaining my 3 acres. Not one single problem. Just changed plugs/filters for the second time after the 8 hour break-in.

Mine has the Kawasaki fs691v.

I owned a commercial business for over 28 years. I would jump on that Kubota diesel ZD21 if it is still available like yesterday. If you have the ability to work on stuff like you said, then you will love this. It has the power and durablitliy. Just change filters on schedule and make sure it gets good air flow to keep everything cool.

If you are just going to use it as a residential mower on your own place, it will last a LONG TIME

Kohler and Briggs both have top of the line engines that are comparable to Kawasaki. Kohler Command is their cadillac.

I'm headed to pick up a brand new (2016 model) Ferris IS700Z in the morning. 61" deck, Kawasaki powered for $5965. Love the suspension on them and normal price is $7200. They are clearing out for the '17 models.

Thanks for all the input. I knew opinions would be everywhere on something like this, but it was definitely a help! I'm excited to have a 10 MPH mower And it should last me a VERY long time! Great warranty too.

From Leslie's? I've got a couple of buddies at work who've bought them and they absolutely love them. One has had his for ~ 5 yrs with no problems.

Not from Leslie's, they didn't have one with the Kawasaki power and 61" deck. They quoted me $7200 for a '17 model.....I'm actually driving all the way to Ft Worth, but it's worth the $1200 savings! I will say the folks at Leslie's were very nice and helpful. I feel a little bad about not buying from them, but $1200 is $1200 and they wouldn't give on the 2017 price.

GREAT to know about the reliability though.
