I have some areas in my yard where St Augustine has crawled in to my Bermuda grass. I have some weeds there too. What would be safe to spray those areas with to kill broadleaf weeds?

Best long term solution is to grow your Bermuda thick.

Mow it low, mow it often, keeps it dense to choke out the St. Aug and most weeds.

The two species react to the same herbicides, unfortunately. I have the exact opposite problem- wild Bermuda invading my St. Augustine. I mow it tall and water frequently for that reason. Bermuda tends to be more drought-resistant than St. Augustine, so less watering and short mowing will kill off the St. Augustine.

Interesting, did not realize that.

I like both grasses. My St Augustine is growing under my live oaks and I have Tifway 419 Bermuda out in the fully exposed to sun areas. I just want to get rid of the weeds! Last year I was lackadaisical. Not this year.

This time of year, before the bermuda starts to green up, I spray round-up to kill unwanted weeds and grasses. Herbicides generally only kill what's green but you have to wait for a fairly warm day for it to be effective. Most herbicides don't work well below about 80 degrees.

As for the St. Augustine, you can cut back on water this summer and kill that stuff pretty easily. Unlike bermuda, once it turns brown it's pretty much dead.

Guaranteed to work.

I have tried it all. This is the only thing I've found so far that is effective every time. Mix it, spray it and give it a week or two before seeing results.

MSM can be tough on trees if used improperly.

Bayer Advanced is the way to go. They have the weed killer and preemergent you need.

bump. Got some nasty weeds in a mixed yard this year. My yard has St. Augustine and Bermuda. Maybe some Floratam (how can you tell?) the Bayer advanced for Southern Lawns says it will kill Floratam. I would hate to kill my yard because I mistook Floratam for St. Augustine.

I was told that Floratam has maroonish runners after it matures a year or two. Mine does.

There is a guy in our neighborhood that killed all his oak trees after spraying weed killer on his lawn. Almost twenty live oaks and post oaks standing with no leaves. I am not sure what he used.

FlorTam is simply a variety of St. Augustine - like Raleigh or DelMar.. Watch your labels carefully. I have used the Ortho hose-end sprayer premix FOR SOUTHERN LAWNS with good success on FlorTam. ALWAYS add a tablespoon or two of Dawn to the container and mix before hooking it up.

House was built in 2005. These weeds are invading like crazy. Should have jumped on this sooner.

I'm going to try Bayer WG Celsius this year. Expensive but it doesn't take much per gallon of water. Supposed to be safe for St Augustine and Bermuda.

I generally always use the Scotts Weed and Feed for Southern Lawns. It comes in the yellow container at Walmart and Home Depot.
