Why do I root for Todd Hoffman (Gold Rush)?

I don't understand why I keep rooting for Todd Hoffman to do well.

1. He seems to always make bad decisions.
2. It's all about Jesus one minute, then they are fighting and wrestling in the dirt the next minute.
3. He's always sniping at Parker and taking the low road.

For some reason despite all his bumbling, against all odds I keep rooting for him. What is wrong with me?

I quit watching when the word "disaster" was used every third or fourth word, like at any second they would lose everything if they only got 100 ounces instead of 99 and 1/2.
I always rooted for Parker until his granddad died, now he seems like a ***** too.
When I finally quit watching, I thought the dutch guy was ok, even though you didn't get to hear much of what he said since they bleeped out all the cuss words, and he cussed a ton.

I don't find Tony or his operation very interesting. Sometimes I fast-forward through the parts about the dredge. Is there anything more boring than taking a dredge apart and putting it back together?

You'd think by now they'd have enough money to keep a successful sustainable operation but every year it seems they fall short somehow. I sorta root for the guy too.

Whatever happened to the Dakota boys?

I think they quit the show after the 4th season.

He's the only reason I watch. Not many men like him these days. That dude pisses power.

Todd is an idiot and deserves everything that is happening. I enjoy watching him fail. Its like if you consistently make poor decisions and just count on your faith to bail you out bad things still happen. Who knew!?

I'm guessing that you always have faith in and root for Aggie football?

Can we hire Tony for HC?

I'm rooting for Tony to get critically injured and for Parker to get his ass kicked by his crew. Todd is good man at heart.

Never made it to the 2nd season. Dumb and contrived. The idiots pretending to live wild in Alaska in a subdivision just outside town has more realism.

I watch and always wonder how they are doing all that without any SWPPP.

According to Todds twitter, he says something "big" is happening this Friday.

Funny story...

I met the Hoffman crew at SHOT Show a couple years back. As I was going through the line to get my picture with Todd and Jack I started chatting with Dave Turin. This was after their South America debacle. As a Project Manager and Engineer, it was obvious that their roads were the weak link down there. No roads, no pay dirt, and no gold. I asked Dave if they ever thought to hire a Civil Engineer to help them design good roads, and he got this odd look on his face and said, "I am a Civili Engineer, dude!" I just said Oh, well, I guess you had it figured out then and we laughed and I went on to take my picture. That kinda put their whole crew into perspective for me.

It's not real....

I don't get "reality" TV.

Just a bad soap opera.

I would have throught this formula would be played out by now.

They will be mining in Colorado

He makes bad decisions but I can't help but think it's all orchestrated. I watch, but like all of these shows they eventually jump the shark. It becomes too much about the drama not the actual 'doing'.

The longer this show has run the more I am skeptical of what is real and what is not. I still watch, but I just can't understand why Todd Hoffman always leaves areas where he is succeeding to try and chase a possibility. I know some people are just like that, but I wonder if it's not made up drama.

I'm a big fan of the show and sadly enjoy watching Todd fail. He is always looking for the next easy pay day. Definately not a real miner in my opinion just someone who surrounds himself with quality labor to get the job done.

Big fan of Tony, guy is constantly cussing. Doesnt give a damn.
Respect Parker, he works hard for what he does. Not the best people manager but he is a 22 year old guy running a million dollar operation.

Gold Rush is notoriously fake. This fact is the primary reason that Discovery discontinued their online forum to discuss episodes.

Numerous insiders have indicated that the whole thing is a scam and the Hoffmans are some pretty shady people.

Hell it even spawned a facebook page to discuss it.

Real Gold Mining is a pretty tight community, and the Alaska one even smaller. Tons of red flags.

Watch it to see them fail, but to think you are rooting for anything other than a Jersey Shore tv show is incorrect.

It's a great show to watch to numb your mind after a week of work.

That facebook site is brutal.
Yes, everyone knows it's fake. lol

I can really hate Tony tho.

they have plenty of money. They make their money from Discovery channel, not from finding gold.

They are getting rich mining discovery and their viewers.

Wow that Facebook page is brutal. Confirms what I suspected but I guess i was a tad naive to the extent of fakeness. I suspected 50% of the Hoffman's season was fake but basically the entire Oregon operation is a sham. I guess my question is, Parker seems to pull in gold. Is what he is mining in a season (3-4000 oz if that can be believed) is that good? Is that unrealistic? In real life it seems like alot of gold but how does that compare to other Yukon mining operations? Anyone have a clue?

This. My wife and I root against Todd. We are big fans of Gene Cheeseman. Tony, Parker (when he isnt acting like an ahole) Dave and Freddy Dodge.

All I know about mining I learned from watching this show...that being said, why the heck don't they take core samples from everyplace they even consider mining? Not doing that just seems like such an obvious "tv move", that it's hard to take anything seriously.

I've always assumed Todd was a joke. Nobody keeps leaving super profitable operations for new ones without tons of compensation.

I always assume Tony is real since he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to give a crap about anything but making money.

Parker has been on that claim too freaking long to be fake at this point. We've seen hints of him trying to grow as well and he really seems to know what he's doing (and his new chick ain't bad).

The "village idiot" from season 1 who got in a fist fight with one of the guys spilled all the beans a few years back when discovery violated his contract. Hoffmanns had the whole story line written for about two years before the show first aired. Dorsey said that he actually got a license to operate heavy machinery and some kind of license to operate a mine and was one of the few that knew what he was doing but discovery cast him as the idiot hipster. He said that the "48 hour" deadline to find some gold in season 1 was filmed over 2-3 weeks. The reacts of people were usually real but the producer would tell someone to go say XYZ to the guy with a known bad temper and they would catch it on camera. Pretty interesting to read. I'll see if I can find it

I haven't watched this show since season 2. This discussion kinda made me want to go back and watch what I missed, but I'm not even sure what channel it's on. I thought it would be on history, but my history roku app doesn't list Gold Rush.
