GoPro harness? Or hat attachment?

Going on a quail hunt next week and I'm borrowing a buddy's GoPro to fart around with. I'd like to get some video of points and flushes if we're lucky enough to find some birds. He has the camera but limited accessories so I'd like to get a quality... harness (I don't know what to call it?) that I can use and then let him keep it as a small thanks for letting me borrow it. Ideally I'd like to wear it on my head because I think that is my best angle for filming the dogs/flush/shots.

Any recommendations from those of you that may have done something like this?

It's a "Chesty". The harness is called a "Chesty", Sean.

That said, use the cap attachment or head strap. You'll want to be able to video where your eyes point. Turn your head to see something flushing to your right...you won't capture anything on video except what's straight in front of your chest. Get my drift?

I recently took hours of hiking film with mine in big bend, but using it in time lapse mode for long sections of the hike. I wore mine with the head strap mount over a baseball cap, and it came out pretty well. Remember, though, that it looks where you do, and with your peripheral vision, a quick turn of your head to look isn't nearly as disorienting or visually distressing as it is for people watching the captured video of the same action. Make sure to take longer than normal looks, and turn your head slower when you remember, or when you can, and the resulting video is much more pleasing to watch.

Something as simple as this will work and will be versatile. Clip it to your hat, to a back pack, or anything else.

I also used one of these when skeet shooting the other week. It made for some cool looking shots. The ones when I had the camera pointed toward me were good for seeing how I looked when I was shooting. The ones pointed towards the clays were hard to see the clays. Go Pro is not great for anything at a distance, but still looked cool because you could see the barrel swing

What I always like to do before I do an activity with my GoPro is look at youtube videos for "_______ and Go Pro" to see what videos others have done and what I like and don't like of different angles and mounts

Also, anything strapped to your chest will be obstructed when you raise your arms up to bring the gun to your shoulder. Even if momentarily, your camera will be blocked. Less likely to happen when mounted to your noggin.

Hat attachment.

GoPro makes a chest rig that is a little awkward to get used to, but works well over a fishing shirt. They also make a tubing clamp that might work if you oriented the camera on the underside and clamped it to the barrel.

To be clear, I definitely do NOT want a chest mounted attachment. As Dodge said, it'll be obstructed when I mount the shotgun. I definitely want to wear the camera on my head, I just don't know what to call the headlamp type "around and over" my hat straps are called. ... And would like to minimize any wiggle/bounce as much as possible. Didn't know if I need to use a specific GoPro attachment, or if there was a better brand option.

Head will definitely minimize the shakiness (as opposed to some other ways to hold it)

As far as brands third party companies tend to be cheaper but just as good as go pro branded mounts

Some may have different ideas, but putting a hole in a spare hat and using this will work great. I use one on my hardhat regularly.

Get really close to your dogs on point. All the GoPro I've ever tried or seen makes video where everything looks a lot farther away than it actually is. If you stand ten yards from them on point, when you plug in the video you're gonna be disappointed. It will look like they are thirty yards away.

That's "fish eye", I believe. It's an effect created by the small convex lense of the GoPro. You can remove this in later editing.

I've used that exact piece on a lot of duck hunts and it works great. It takes just a second to adjust, is comfortable and will also get some cool video of you looking down the gun.

All I use for bird hunting. The gun attachment one is cool but two bad things about it... it changes the weight of your gun (which impacted my shooting) and it tends to rub on the finish or blueing of the gun, leaving behind marks.

Go with the head strap and don't look back.

They make a harness for dogs too, which I think would be cool to get the dog's perspective and they are closer to the bird when on point typically. With the head strap, make sure it is on straight as I had a lot of crooked videos from a South Dakota pheasant hunt.

I like the hat/head strap because it gives wearers point of view. The downside is it moves a lot, makeing for messy videos when you look around or scan with your head.

What about a Shoulder mount? I have seen people use these at gun matches, but have not seen their videos.

I can +1 on this vs the hat attachment. Wayyyy more stable. You'll look goofy but that's probably your life story

I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. I put the GoPro to work this weekend and now I have a couple of hours of raw footage to sort through and edit.

Any helpful tips, or beneficial software I should look at for editing the footage? I know some of the YouTube GoPro video I've seen has slow mo shots, etc.

This weekend was really just a training run, but it was kind of fun if a little shaky on the video front (literally).

ha forgot to check dates

The GoPro software is ok but not terrible for a free program.

Thanks. I'll use the GoPro software and see how it works. I watched a good bit of the video last night and it only made me moderately sea sick. I have a couple of quail kills on video for sure but it's tough to see a lot of what is going on. Also one rooster miss but he was at a good distance and we were mostly hoping for the golden bb scenario on him.

Still kind of fun to watch.

GoPro software and iMovie ( if you have a mac) is what I use for all my GoPro footage
If you don't have a mac stick with the free GoPro software

It has the ability to create slo-mo and other effects as well

I have found that the hat clip harness, depending on the thickness of the hat bill, can be a little heavy and tilt your head down. It also has has a tendency to slide off the bill of the hat easily. Here's an alternative option: https://livelivegear.myshopify.com/.

Oh no........I am now going to be forced to watch game film of the last hunt to be shown all the mistakes I made and what we have to do better on the upcoming hunt.
