I've got an Abu Garcia Vantage VXL 5000c reel that I've been having some issues with. Essentially, it reels in line perfectly fine until the line guide reaches the far left hand side of the reel. Then it just sort of bounces on the far side resulting in the line bunching up on that side. I've taken it apart and cleaned it well, didn't notice any damage to the gears. But I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts or ideas about what may be going on? Any insight or suggestions would really be appreciated!

Here is a video of it messing up...

The pawl is worn out. New pawl and you should be good. Check your gear and shaft, they may need replacing also.

That's what I was thinking! Wanted to ask the Wizards of the outdoor board before ordering.

Any insight into where to get parts? Go through Abu Garcia?

Used to be able to get Abu parts at Academy. Not sure any more though. Worth a shot.

That's an easy fix. Turn the reel upside down and unscrew the screw that goes into the worm gear and it will come out. You'll know when you see it. Should be able to find that part on the internet I would think.

dtk - where are you. I have a sack of them somewhere. If I can find them I would be glad to send you one. I get my reel parts from Southwestern on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas.

I've had the same Abu going on 20 years now. Love it more than any fishing gear I have. I've only had to replace the worm gear once so far.

Man, I have about 30 of these reels, some from the 60 and I've seen a worn out pawl so bad it won't work once. I've spent a lot of my youth and free time repairing the crappiest junk that comes across Craigslist for my collection. That pawl has to twist in its cylinder and the cap is removed by a flathead as suggested above. That is almost always where the grit and abuse ends up on the thing. They do wear out but I'd start there. If it is worn, better peek at the worm gear too.

Also second southwest parts in Dallas. They will even dig around in their used parts bin if you need an end cap because the owner crushed it under his car seat. You know....If you need it.

Good luck... Those are great reels.
