Gear reviews are useful so I thought I write one up for anyone need a good travel mug.
I've been using an Aladdin Stanley mug that looked like the lower half of a typical green Stanley Thermos with an attached handle. I really like it until I realized Mrs. Ledbetter's el cheapo travel mug keeps coffee hot much longer, so I decided to replace it.
I bought the 16 oz. Thermos in the link for a bit over $20. It claims to keep coffee hot for up to five hours.
What I like:
It's vacuum sealed stainless construction keeps coffee almost too hot! If you need to ingest large amounts of coffee first thing in the morning, use a coffee cup. I can fill this mug up with a quad Americano and over two hours later the few swallows left in the bottom of the mug are still steaming hot.
It lives up to its claim to keep liquids hot for about five hours. More than enough time for me.
Coffee stays hot and keeps its flavor.
The lid has a lever to open or lock it closed to prevent spillage and maintain heat. It works well and doesn't leak. The drink openings in the lid won't vapor lock and scald your lips like my Stanley did sometimes. It's easy to sip hot coffee. The lid seals very well and when I open the lever with really hot coffee, it sounds like Darth Vader's helmet when it seals in place
It's hefty and has a quality, well made feel to it.
It's easy handle, stays cool to the touch when full of hot coffee, and coffee is easy to sip from it.
What I don't like:
You need the locking lid because the mug is tall and has a narrow, tapered base designed to fit in a variety of vehicle cup holders. This makes the mug top heavy and prone to tipping over. You have to set the mug on something fairly level or it will tip over. If the narrow base doesn't fit the cup holder in your car, it'll roll around a little. If the lid didn't lock closed, the mug would be useless to me. With a bit of practice it can easily be opened and closed with one hand while driving.
TL/DNR:
The mug is great at keeping coffee hot for hours. The lid locks closed and seals very well to prevent spillage. You need the lid because the tall, top heavy mug will tip over if bumped.
Overall, I'm happy with it and would recommend it.
