I am interested in buying a hard case for my CZ Scorpion and cutting my own foam inserts for the case to hold the weapon, stock folded and several mags. Is it cost effective to do this on my own or should I just buy cases already made to hold it? They run about $130. Anyone cut foam before? Is it pretty easy to get a good fit?

outline your gun with chalk , very easy.
Pleased with how mine turned out, I saw at my local academy they have them in tan as well.

edit: the foam is precut into very small cubes you just take out what you don't need, no cutting

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but did want to ask how do you like your Scorpion? Those are one of the few things that have appeared lately that I find interesting...........

I absolutely love it! SBR'd its an amazing little rifle. Recoil is almost nonexistent. Shoots great groups out of the box to 100yds easily.

Fairly simple to do. Cut a poster board outline of the gun. Pin it to the foam and then use lots of exacto knives to cut the foam. Change the blade as soon as the foam starts to drag. I did this one several years ago and have several different foam sets depending on what I intend to carry

They are fun as hell. I'd put them in the upper middle of the pack on the 9mm sub guns. I like the Vector and the MPX more but the scorpion was fun as hell when I had it.

Pelican cases come with the foam. You can buy extra foam from Amazon or lots of other places that sell the cases.

I'll check amazon.

I have a gun case and no intention on spending pelican level money to take my deer rifle back and forth from the lease or range. But I would like a more custom fit in the case I have

If you're in Houston, I can probably knock it out pretty quick. Otherwise, if you're out of town, the logistics and cost just become too prohibitive. At that point I'd tell you just to go the exacto or electric knife route.

If you're interested shoot me an email (user @g mail).

Love my Evo SBR, but I just tossed it into a backpack with some mags so it's non-discrete. The CZ hard case has CZ all over and other cases all seem to scream "gun case".

I have four (two 36" and two 42") of these with the pick out foam squares and love them. ARs, shotguns and handguns all tucked together for different load outs.

I did one with a homebrew hot wire setup. Took my 12V battery charger and some craft wire and had an arm to hold the wire above a scrap plywood "table". I had to experiment with different wire thicknesses to prevent the wire from melting or the battery charger's circuit breaker from tripping.

To buy foam, I would look at Kaizen Foam from Fast Cap. It comes out the tools/contracting industry for creating custom tool holders for drawers, cabinets, tool boxes. I found it when trying to plan out shipping some expensive optics.

It is layered, so the depth can be varied. It is a bit more rigid than the foam in a lot gun cases but I find that makes it easer to cut than the squishy foam. And the layered designed is so much better than the vertical "pull-out" grids for depth. It can also be stacked and glued for more depth.

A review/Description of using it.

I just bought a RIDGID tool case from Amazon (sells at Home Depot) for $29. Will be buying Kaizen foam inserts made specifically for this case. Will be able to cut it to my specs once it gets here. I just don't know now if I need foam for both halves of the case or not? And what thickness works best with that box....A little more research and I will be good to go!

I was looking at this for 2 separate projects. One is converting an old metal box into a range box/ deer lease box. To hold my handgun(s) knives sharpeners etc when going back and forth from the lease. I usually use an old ammo can but I wanted to step my game up with something a bit more custom. I think this will work well

BUT...

While I was at it I also wanted to take my existing aluminum rifle case and put some new custom foam in it to carry my deer rifle as well....the issue is that I can only find the Kaizen foam in 2'x4' pieces, my case is about 55" long. Is there anywhere I can find longer foam? Have any of you tried splicing aper are pieces together to cover the end? Advice is welcomed.

Big fan of the Pelican.

Have a Pelican and cut the foam myself with an electric knife. It is a two rifle case, and the foam had to be pretty thin in two spots to accommodate two scoped rifles. Also bought uncut foam off Amazon to cut for ARs.

I have made 3 flights that I brought two scoped rifles on, and they never zero on any flight while in that case. Worth every penny and time spent cutting foam.

I just met the owner of this company yesterday...

http://airarmortech.com

I may never buy another hard case again. I have several of his products on the way, and he is in the process of expanding the line and inproving the web page.

His next generation of products will be much more price point driven, but the quality is there and he has product being jumped by several ODA's right now.

Great product idea, well built, and when you let the air out the full size case folds up smaller than the Houston Chronicle. The scope covers can easily fit in a cargo pocket.

And...he is an Aggie, class of '94.

No experience but have seen these advertised online for electrical equipment.

Is 18" enough $42 or 28" for $68?
18" case
  • External dimensions (L x W x H): 18" x 14" x 7"
  • Approximate internal Dimensions (L x W x H): 17" x 11 " x 6"
  • Maximum cubed-foam customizable area: 15 " x 10" x 3"
28" case
  • External dimensions (L x W x H): 28" x 16 " x 7"
  • Approximate internal dimensions (L x W x H): 25" x 13" x 6"
All

Here's a thread that you should visit. Hot wire foam cutting is the only way to go.

How much would you pay for custom foam cutting?
