So my old man was a big bird hunter in his youth and hasn't been able to get out and hunt birds in several decades. He's retired now and I'd like to take him on a quail hunt sometime this fall/winter and wanted to see if anybody had any reasonably-priced recommendations. All I'm really look for is something that's maybe a one-night deal. What I've done before is you arrive in the afternoon. Either shoot clays or dove that evening. Eat steaks and drink a few cocktails by the fire that night. Then a quail hunt the next morning and back home.

I've done several hunts as a guest at places like Joshua Creek and Tonkaway Ranch. I'm big fans of both, but my pops is a much simpler man. I've looked at numerous places and I'm getting a wide variety of pricing. I've seen pricing anywhere from $300 per gun all the way up to $1,800 per gun. In terms of location, I'm in Austin and he's in Marble Falls and I don't mind driving a little ways if we have to to get a great experience. But ideally, it's more of a mom and pop shop than a large commercial one. I'd love to hear what you guys have in terms of recommendations.

Check out QuailHuntDimeBox.com

Mike does an excellent hunt and it is between BCS and Austin.

As long as we're talking released quail, Walton Ranch in Navasota sounds like what you're after.

Aggie owned. It's definitely more of a simple man's type of outfit. You won't need a Filson jacket or a fancy shotgun to fit in.

I don't believe they do overnight guests anymore though.

These are great recommendations--thank you! I also just got a text from a buddy about the outfitters in Dime Box. Thank you both for the info!

At another level consider calling Ted McKnight 512-589-6448. Hat Ranch near Paintrock. NW of Brady and east of Angelo. My hunting buddy and I guide for him Weekends after deer season over. Come in on Friday, we have clays. Hunt Sat am and pm. Hunt Sunday am. Nice house with 2 full baths. Meals and non-alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is fine (not included) and notably improves some peoples shooting. 2300 acre ranch. Our Saturdays are typically 20 covey day. Big coveys. Saw one blue once but we killed him. Rest are bobs. Not sure what the rate is but probably about $700 Like to hunt 4-6 just to make the money work. Be ready to walk. After we get done walking, we walk some more. Easy country, just a lot of it.

That guy's dogs don't even have tails. Plus he's been known to wear the burnt orange from time to time.

Just kidding. Tell Jason the only bird hunter he knows in the Panhandle says hi next time you see him.
