I have a 5 to 7 acre tract that is literally covered with grass burrs. The place is right off the river so the soil is sandy which grass burrs love. The grass burrs are as thick and dense as Bermuda grass. Around March 1 of this year I had a the local fertilizer guy come out and put a preemergent out to prevent the stickers but it didn't really seem to slow them down.
He told me that since my place has too many trees that it was a pain to spray since he has to dodge objects with his sprayers. He told me I need to get a spray rig on my tractor and that he would sell me the chemicals to add to spray and for me to do it myself.
My eventual plan is to grow coastal and have cows. With the disappointing results of the preemergent, am I better off just putting in coastal and letting it choke out the grass burrs or should I keep spraying the chemicals to try to kill the grass burrs.
If spraying, what chemical should I be using to kill the stickers? I need to mow one more time before the fall and the grass stops growing so should I spray now before I cut or do I wait until next spring to put out another preemergent.
Property is located 1 hour southwest of Fort Worth. Thanks.
