Crack in Shotgun Stock

I have a Browning Cynergy Classic that I have just found a crack in the butt stock. It is in the grip and goes from the trigger metal back towards the butt of the rifle through the middle of the grip.

I know I can call Browning or go to a service center (The one listed for Houston is Freer). I will have to figure out that whole process and I doubt it's under warranty. I can work through that though.

I'm pretty disappointed in truth. It has always been safe kept with humidity control, don't expose it to extreme conditions. Only thing I could think is I had it in my truck Friday since I was going straight from work, but I park in a garage and the truck wasn't hot at all when I got there.

My main question is should I be worried about using it next weekend? I have a versamax but I am shooting in a sporting clays tourney and would usually use the o/u for that.

Second question is has anyone had this issue before? I feel like I take good care of the gun and never expected it to have a dang cracked stock. It's probably not too deep but still, I paid enough for the gun I expected more. It's only 5 years old.

So what say you, o wise OB?

Can you post a pic of the crack, or email it to me shawn@huntbcs.Com

Some stock cracks can be repaired by injecting epoxy into the crack. Some require insertion of pins perpendicular to the crack. All depends on where it's cracked, how deep, etc.

My brother in law somehow managed to shut his garage door on his 220 swift cracking the stock. He used some kind of super strong wood glue and left it c clamped together for a week. It has held for 15 years. You have to look pretty hard to find the crack.

I have not had a cracked stock on a shotgun but I have had to use Browning's warranty service (in my case Mid-West Gunworks). I suggest you contact Fleers (or MGW) directly rather than Browning. My problem was with the firing pins on a Citori. MGW was much more helpful than Browning and I sent the gun directly to them. I was satisfied with the repair and the turn around time.

As far as the warranty goes I was told by MGW that Browning's policy was that if the gun was a year old and looked like it had been drug behind a truck they would not cover it. If the gun was 10 years old and well cared for they would fix it.

I can't get a picture to show it. The crack itself is very thin and runs through the middle of the grip, parallel with the bottom of the action. I found it by feel and that is the main way to see it.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to call Brownings Houston shop on the website on Monday and go from there.

I don't think I'll shoot it for a while. I'll just use my Versamax. Pretty bummed by the whole thing but hopefully Browning makes it right.

OP,

Not sure if he's still working but I have an old side by side Fox Savage that I learned to shoot on, stock was in bad shape when my dad let me pick it out of his collection for repairs, crack in the stock was large and wood deteriorating. I was given the name of a guy who is one of the best in the country at repairing old damaged wood stocks. He did a phenomenal job, price was a bit steep but worth every penny.

I realize your gun is new but if you strike out on your service contacts PM me and I'll try and dig up his number.

As I understand it Browning has no stated warranty so they can decide on a case by case basis.

I wouldn't doubt that at all as wood glue typically is stronger than the surrounding wood. As long as the direction of motion with the wood is the same direction(and it should be in a stock), you should have no issue with it holding

Thanks. I'll drop you a line if I can't make Browning work.

Honestly, why has no one suggested duct tape?

Seriously good luck on getting it repaired!

Hopefully you are correct. Seems like that would be in my favor.

If I didn't have the Remington that would be what I do for this weekend!

My Browning Silver Hunter forestock cracked after a couple of years of use. Split right down the underside along the grain. Browning said "yeah, it happens for any number of reasons". They were willing to fix it if I shipped them the gun for inspection, and if they decided it was warrantable, they would replace both butt and forearm so it matched. I explored the option of buying a new stock set that was a better grade.

In the end, I took my forearm off, flexed it to open up the crack a little, and used TiteBond III. I simply diluted it with a little water so it would 'flow' in to the crack a little better. Then I flexed it the opposite way to CLOSE the crack gently and wiped off the excess. I can feel the crack if I use my finger nail but you cannot see it at all unless you flip it over and hit it with light in exactly the right spot.

It will be stronger than the surrounding wood.

Best product to use would be Brownells Acraglass. I've used it on a couple of stocks now.

Just dropped it off at Freer's in Houston. They are going to break it apart and then contact Browning as to whether or not it is covered under warranty.

If it is covered I will just get it fixed through them. If not I am still up in the air as to what I want to do. Part of me says just go back with another field grade matched pair of stocks. Another part of me says I need to commission Agrams to make me a custom set out of some crazy wood that nobody ever uses for a shotgun.

Guess I'll have to wait it out.

wouldn't duck tape be better for a shotgun?

I wouldn't mind a stock made from Grenadilla Wood - typically used for clarinets and woodwinds, we have a gorgeous Taylor guitar made from it.

Latest update - finally heard back from Browning and they will not cover it under warranty. Did not give me a reason just said it wasn't covered. They offered to replace the stock for ~$460. I said ship it back to me.

I will probably shoot it for a while to see if it gets any worse. It's just a hairline crack right now. If it opens up more I will probably try to get it repaired.

Pretty disappointed in Browning on this one. Everyone always says they are an American company that stands behind their products but they sure didn't for me.

Nah. They don't give a damn. They wanted me to.ship mine in so they could see if it was covered and to match the wood. I didn't because I knew that was code for "after he ships it, well sell him a new stock".

I ended up openening up the fore end and using titebond III. It's held wood together far better than specialty adhesives. It fixed mine. And I already had it on hand. That's what it's for.

I bought a browning BPS 10 gauge to use goose hunting. I took it to eagle mountain lake in 1998, the day after I bought it. On the 27th round the butt stock split in half. I got the same story from browning. They would not warranty a one day old shotgun. I bought an aftermarket stock and sold it along with 3 browning rifles and one other shotgun. I will never buy anything with a browning logo on it. They just don't care about us so I don't care about them. Replaced it with a Remington SPS 10 gauge and it is a much better shotgun! Over 1,000 rounds later it still has the original stock!
