Cool, wish it was NOLS teaching it. All my certs are through NOLS so I have to stick with them for re-certification.

Fellow NOLS student. I didn't do any first aid certs though.

You don't have to recert through NOLS. I've recertified my Wilderness first responder through four different organizations, including NOLS.

Completed the course yesterday. Overall, I think it was valuable information that probably every outdoorsman should be exposed to. Depending on your experience or background, the information might be basic, but definitely plenty of takeaways if you go into it with an open mind.

@dubi - Thanks for posting the course info! Would have never known about the opportunity otherwise.

I plan to enroll in one of these courses at some point, but am unable to dedicate an entire weekend at this time. Does anyone know of a good wilderness first aid online course/ video series or book that I can work through in the meantime?

What gets covered in a Wilderness first aid class vs. the standard Red Cross FA class?
ursusguy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
In a standard first aid course, you are usually being taught with the notion that EMS can/will be on site in a matter of minutes. So what do you need to know/plan for if you are looking at more than 2 hours to a medical facility? That is what the wilderness first aid is aimed at. A WFA class is going to spend time a lot of time on treating shock, pain management, infection avoidance, limb immunization and transport.

This explains it better.

Totally forgot about this...

Looks like Longleaf Wilderness isn't holding any more courses in Texas...that was who I certified with 2 years ago. Since the recert is every 2 years, I was expecting it in late April again.

Just took this class through NOLS in Austin. Highly recommend if you are a hunter, outdoorsman or even in an Ag field where you're frequently 30 min-1 hour away from help getting there (or you getting out)
