Since this is such an entertaining search, I thought I'd see what our OB thought about Michigan's new law: http://www.khou.com/news/local/animals/law-would-prohibit-communities-from-banning-pit-bulls/315538174

I don't like pit bulls at all, but banning a breed is stupid. It comes down to how they are raised and trained.

I have personally known three Pitts. All were very sweet awesome dogs who never showed any agression toward kids or other dogs.

They didn't like cats or squirrels.

It is 100% the owners.

Lets change that to owning anything that is not directly related to surviving.

I am so sick of seeing people in hud houses and use food stamps carrying iphone 7.8's and driving hooptied out caddies, yet thier kids don't have coats that fit or pants without holes.

My family owned 2-3 pits growing up (all male). Never hurt anyone. Would bark at strangers but never showed aggression towards anyone as long as they were invited into the yard (came through the house or gate with one of us). Did have more than one meter reader get chased when they jumped our fence. Only aggression I ever witnessed from them was towards another male dog when a nearby female dog was in heat.

I think they are risky & I don't like them. That said, this should be a matter of local control - let communities decide. Why would the state want to get involved in local ordinances?

I've never understand why someone would get a dog that was bred for one thing, then train it to not do what it is genetically predisposed to do.

Why not go to the pound, get a dog that comes from more people friendly breeds, and save it from being put down?

And if you are determined to get a "mean" breed dog, at least get one that can't kill someone.

If a city/town wants to ban pits.. then they should be allowed to. If someone doesn't like said law.... they can choose to live elsewhere.

Funny how this board is typically a states' rights minded group..... But on this topic, which is analogous in terms of legal overreach of a larger government entity over smaller one... a large percentage supports big gubment.

Go figure.

Most states rights people want the state to have control over the municipality. They want the national government only to do what is provisioned in the constitution and leave the rest to the states.

The municipality vs the state is not analogous to the state vs federal government.

They aren't for the most local government having the most control.

Most people also don't want their child killed by a some shady neighbor's pit bull either.

It's certainly analogous.... Validity can be questioned however, if you so choose.

Nevertheless.... if a state wants to ban these types of ordinances, fine. In this case however, the alternative should (IMO) be felony manslaughter charge for any dog owner(s) whose dog kills someone.... with a mandatory 25 year sentence w/o the possibility of parole/early release. But y'all probably don't want that either.

Good advice. I try to follow just that.

Unfortunately... it's not always just shady people that own them.... just usually.

If life were that simple... we wouldn't need laws. But then you already knew that.

Because there is no such thing as a mean breed dog. No dog is predisposed to violence. Pitts were bred as work dogs. Rotts were bred as herding dogs.

I owned a Rott he was the best dog I have ever owned and he was super sweet. He loved my kids and was very protective of them.

The idea that there is a mean breed is liberal sensationalism at it's best.

I would argue the only mean dogs are the toy breeds like chihuahuas.

Fortunately when they bite they aren't going to kill anyone.

Nope. Liberal sensationalism. Just like Black Lives matter pointing out all of the killings but ignoring the literally thousands of counter examples.

Pit bulls aren't nearly as effective as German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers at killing people. Pit bulls are good at killing dogs.

I hate Pit Bulls. I see value in a good guard dog. They don't have to be mean to be effective either. A nice Rottweiler will kill a burglar quick.

The statistics of deaths from pits and rots is overwhelming. They were bred to kill, and they kill. You're entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

I didn't know that. I always assumed they were. What about Dobermans? Were they bred as guard dogs?

Rotts were bred as herding dogs and are used for that purpose today. They are particularly good at moving stubborn animals. They also can pull carts and were used by butchers to take meat the the markets.

As far as I know, Dobermans were bread to be guard dogs. I think the original breeder was a tax collector.

Our country has literally been doing that since day 1. Go lookup the first of the Bill of Rights.
