Will be vacationing in the keys during Christmas. the two fishing options my hotel is offering is deep sea fishing and "wreck and reef" fishing which as they describe it feels like bay fishing. Anyone fish that area that time of year? Is one trip a better bet for success versus another?

Both routes will get you a bunch of fish. Deep sea is cool, but I prefer shallow water. Wreck and reef will be your typical touristy big boat loaded with NFMF's, anchored at a wreck or reef, and dropping cut bait for the billions of fish down there, with hopes to grab some keeper sized mangrove, yellow tail, maybe a few grouper. Plenty of jacks and other strong fish to keep tight lines. Maybe a cuda or shark to wow the NFMF's with something toothy. If you are a fisherman at all, avoid that trip.

There are 1000 guides down there for 'bay fishing' type trips, and they have some of the best shallow water fishing for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Find one of those. Islamorada is loaded down with them if you are in that area, as is Key West of you are farther south. Hawks Cay in Duck Key has a handful of flats fishing guides at the resort if you are in that area. Marathon has plenty of options as well.

Enjoy it. My family goes for a month every year for the past 25 years. I love flats fishing the Keys. The fish are spooky there compared to some of the other international spots, but you can catch 10+ lb bonefish which you won't get in Belize or the Bahamas. Permit are awesome, and a great battle on fly tackle. Tarpon can be had on the flats, or night fishing the bridges.
