Thinking about getting one of these that goes around the eaves of the house. Pest control guy suggested he might be able to install one for $2000 or so.

Anybody have one? You like it? Can I buy refills and service it myself? Do the skeeters develop a resistance? Worth it overall?

These systems are losing favor simply because they are very effective.......

At killing damn near everything in sight. Very harsh on lady bugs, butterflies, moths, lightening bugs, and many many beneficial insects.
But they do kill squitos.

We've got one and it is exceptional. I'm in BCS so message me if you want a reference for the company that did ours.

I own a company installing these.

Very effective, yes it kills everything that flies, but by spraying at dawn and dusk you are targeting mosquitos not bees and butterfly that are normally active during the day.

let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for all the replies. Initial cost is not as big a concern as ongoing service, I guess. If I can get one installed I'd like to be able to recharge it and service it myself instead of paying a quarterly fee or whatever.

The ones I've looked at you just add concentrate poison to a 55 gallon barrel of water and maintain yourself.

Mine works great and I have tons of bees etc in the very middle of Houston. Almost zero mosquitos.

You can buy the stuff on amazon for retail price of about $110. should last you 3 months. PS the sprinkler stuff is junk, they arent allowed to use pesticides only class 25b exempt solutions. One of the 6 conditions the 25b classifications condition 4 reads " The product must not bear claims either to control or mitigate organisms that pose a threat to human health, or insects or rodents carrying specific diseases."

Get a misting system, you wont regret it. If your going to do it your self make sure to winterize it come December.

Good luck and GIG EM!

How do you winterize it?

We have one and it has operated perfectly for 6 years.

Our daughter got one and also just had another system installed in the flower beds and grass as well. They have small children and are worried about Zika.

Chaz - Is the organic (chrysanthemum?) based spray equally devastating to all things that fly, or just mosquitoes?

We installed one in The Woodlands. Can barely tolerate going to someone's back yard that doesn't have one now that I know the difference. We used Mosquitonix. Expensive but worth it. We bundled year round interior and exterior pest control with service on the system for about $300/mo. Obviously driven by size of the system/property. Initial cost was about $3000 in 2007. I do not recommend servicing it oneself. They regularly change the mix as mosquitos will build a tolerance, or so they said.

I buy my pyrethrin (Riptide), supplies, and parts online from e-pest solutions. I run the system for about $200 per year.

Guess I am the only one that has a negative experience with a misting system. In my experience, if your neighbors aren't doing it, then it not so effective. Without a residual effect, the mosquitoes here seem to breed faster than can be killed off when spraying only at dusk and dawn.

So the "tankless" systems essentially have concentrate and you hook them up to outdoor water, correct? The "tank" systems you simply refill with liquid when they run out. And the consensus seems to be the tank systems are better?

Tank system.

Dlance, it will kill all insects. The dilution is set for flying insects. Small bugs.

One thing I should mention is on a two story house is the mist many times blows away before it drifts down to the ground. So ground level, which is where you and the mosquitos are, doesn't get treated very well.

Mine really hasn't helped at all. Mosquitoes still all over us.

I had the mist away installed a couple of months back (mistaway.com). Works fine thus far. When there is a huge mosquito hatch you will still have them. I have the drum (55 gallon) and yes you can buy the concentrate (sector or riptide) online.

Do not put the nozzles on the eaves if your house! They need to be a couple of feet off the ground.

My system was $1800.00 installed.

OK. This is different than what my guy suggested. How were the lines raised off the ground? Metal stakes or what?

The line runs along the top of the fence. Nozzle line drops are about 10 feet apart. As someone mentioned earlier, if you have them near the eaves the wind will carry the mist away.

Mine runs the perimeter of my backyard. We have quite a bit of landscaping. We do not have a privacy fence as we back up to a small lake. Just a wrought iron type fence. The nozzles had to be close to the ground since we usually have a breeze. (Backyard faces southeast)

Check out MistAway. I've seen a number of them and know a lot of people that have them. The people that are building their electronics have a lot of pride in their work.

Misting systems shouldnt be installed on the roof or eaves

I actually have a quite a bit of experience in this area as I used to do research and design for a company that made these. the best height for install would be around 2ft to a max of 4ft. above that and the stuff is going to just drift away. I made the tank style systems that had a built in dusk and dawn sensor plus remote. You basically let it run and then you could hit it one more time just before you would use the yard for a party/cookout/etc. You can buy stainless steel risers that will let you run a line through bushes and get that perfect 2ft height. Something like this.

http://mosquitocontrolequipment.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=129

I also made and tested these things.

Same premise. spread them around the yard at a 2 ft height and let it auto run. The nice thing about these is that they are portable and use an aerosol can for the product. You can get them at Ace Hardware

Thank you for your help. Ours was installed under the Eve's of a 2 story house and too much blows away.
