We apparently have developed a flea problem in our backyard within the last couple of weeks. Because of the heat, our dog has only been going out for 10-ish minutes at a time, and still when I bathed him today (he was last bathed 2 weeks ago), I washed out a ton of fleas. So far, no evidence of fleas in the house, and I'd like to keep it that way but I'm at a loss as to what else we can do. Hoping y'all will have some suggestions we haven't tried:

* Cedar mulch in all the flowerbeds (mostly around the perimeter of the yard.

* Husband sprays the whole yard and under the deck (dog's favorite place) with Enforcer spray once a month.

* Dog bathed every 10-14 days with tea tree oil shampoo and treated regularly with Frontline.

I'm pretty much willing to try anything. The dog has to live inside for the foreseeable future but he obviously has to go out to potty, so we really must get the yard under control.

We had an issue this past spring

Put out granular spectracide twice ( apply one, then wait about 2 weeks and apply again) also used the spectracide hose spray after week 4.

Also took dogs off topical treatment to oral (trifexis) I think. Noticed reduction in flea counts each week and Within 24 hrs of oral treatment we have been 100% flea free since

Yeah put them on that stuff from the vet that kills when they bite.

I've always wanted to try beneficial nematodes. It's a long term solution but Ive read a lot of good reviews on it.

As said get vet to give you 3 months of pills, once a month. Do not know the name of the drug but it works. Continue the outside treatment as well

Trifexis comes in a 6 month supply (1 pill a month) and does flea and heartworm. Bravecto is flea but not heartworm (1 chewable for 3 months).

Can you order that online without going thru a vet?

I'm not positive on Bravecto but most vets require you to have a relationship and probably a heartworm test as well for Trifexis.

Spray the yard and dip the dog in Malathion

I think Fleas cycle like every 10-14 days. Maybe double or triple up the yard treatment for a month.

Deer to be safe yes but last time we had fleas, Comfortis sounds right, we did not do an outside treatments and did fine. But if makes you feel better have at it. For about a week after we started the pills us humans would get one or two on us then they were gone.

I boarded my dogs with my vet which is where they picked them up. I was not happy about that.

A few years ago fleas took over our place. Tried "everything" including sprays, granules collars, spot liquid stuff, and flea baths. Vet prescribed monthly pills(Trifexis/Comfortis) and they are a little pricey, but we've been flea free for years since going that route. It works.

Can't remember the brand name but a few weeks ago we went to a new 60-day tick/flea pill, and a 6-month shot for heartworm prevention which is really nice.

If your dog has fleas and spends any time at all inside your house, then you have a flea infestation inside your house. Best option is to have your house treated by a professional exterminator and start the dog on a good flea control product. Talk to your vet about which one he recommends.

Trifexis and be done with the problem.

Frontline is waste of money. Go to vet and get the good stuff.

Another vote for Trifexis. Eradicated fleas with my two dogs without having to call an exterminator.

Thanks, all. We're going to the vet today to get something stronger. Husband is spearheading the outdoor project, so I passed on all your valuable advice.

I own a feedstore and encounter this every day with customers, what we recommend to people is this;

Treat 1) the pet, 2) the house, and 3) the yard at the SAME time. Don't wait a day or two.

Pet: Use permethrin as a dip (dont get on face or around mouth). Let the dog drip dry. Then followup with monthly oral treatments. If it's an active dog, you may get a Senesto Flea Collar, as I think active dogs in this heat may metabolize the pill and drops a lot faster. I may wrong, but I quit using pills/drops on my dogs bc they didn't seem to be working anymore. I haven't seen a flea in months now since I started the Senesto collar.

House: Bomb it with a good flea bomb. Permethrin based.

Yard: Use permethrin in a garden sprayer. Get it everywhere. Use an IGR as well. Don't let anyone or any pets walk on it until it's dry. Spray at dusk, so it stays wetter longer, increasing the chances of the fleas getting into it.

Whether or not you see fleas, do the same treatment two to three weeks later in order to get any newly hatched fleas. This method has worked well for us for the last two summers and our customers seem to have great luck with it. If you have neighbors, talk to them if they have pets and have them treat their pets and yard as well.

The key is treating the host immediately and eliminating the food source for the fleas. Huge difference in the good stuff from your vet and wallyworld. It's amazing how quickly the fleas in the yard will die or move on.
