There are more vendors and more info online about steel targets than I want to sort through.

I would like three things (and I understand that they are separate)

1. Small steel targets for plinking at 25-50 yards with 22LR (for the kiddos, and of course for me too!) This range is closed to anything larger than 22LR.

2. Larger steel targets (gong) for 100-200 yard impact range with rifles 5.56 through 300WinMag This area is setup for sighting in rifles and shooting all kinds of stuff.

3. Pistol targets (what's the ideal distance/ammo selection if shooting steel?) We have paper targets that are moveable from 3-15

Thanks in advance, OB.

i'd like to know how to set up a field of steel spinners in a pasture so as to run a course without having ricochet issues.

I got the link from Log, he recomended them to me. He may will probably be along shortly to give his opinion. They are in Dallas and allow pickup to save on shipping.

I have bought several steel plates from this place and all have worked well....22LR up to 30.06 with very little wear. All I do is hit them with a fresh coat of paint so we can see the hits easily.

We used the 1/2" AR500 ones they sell...and hung from the cable with chains. Seemed reasonably priced and I could pick up in person. They sell on ebay with flat rate shipping I believe.

Shooting steel is much more fun than paper!

OP, one of the big costs is shipping this stuff. If you are near Round Rock, try Ar15targets.com

Jeremy is a great guy and stands behind his product. You won't be disappointed.

Is this just an FYI or are you actually asking a question or looking for recommendations?

If you're looking for recommendations on where to buy them, I've bought several from this place in Georgetown...

For those that have purchased from Custom Manufacturing in Dallas how do the 1/4" thick plates hold up versus 223, 270, 30-06? 3/8" Seems to be the recommended thickness everywhere I look.

Yeah 3/8" is the minimum for rifle. 1/4" is going to get destroyed quickly.

I've purchased quite a few steel targets from these folks.

http://www.jcsteeltargets.com/

The thing I like is they have brackets for their targets to hang on standard t-posts. Very handy to set up a "range" with several targets over a few hundred yards.

Another reason why I like to buy from JC Steel

We support Jubilee Leadership Academy in Prescott, Washington. Jubilee is a Christ-based organization helping young men between the ages of 13-18 find new beginnings in life. We are proud to support this program, check out Jubilee at www.jlacademy.org

Jubilee Leadership Academy also has a welding/fabricating shop to teach students how to weld, cut, and fabricate steel goods. Most students come into Jubilee with no real world skills, so teaching them these skills will hopefully give them a leg up in the real world they will go back to live in.

They also have inexpensive flat rate shipping. Got a few of us together and ordered about $2,500 worth of steel targets. Shipped the entire order for $19.99 (I did call and talk to them before we did it...) Ships USPS....Needless to say the folks at the local post office were not very happy when they received several hundred pounds of steel plates.... If it fits, it ships, right? LOL

Hanging steel targets on t-posts is extremely unsafe unless you have A LOT of property behind and on both sides of the target area.

We got a dueling tree from CMP about a year and a half ago. Lots of fun. When ever the paint chips off we just throw on a coat of spray paint and keep shooting. We've shot it with 9mm to 45 and had no issues with it at all.

Care to expound? I imagine they're hanging on a bracket to the side or between two of them...

Hanging between two would be much safer. The plate mounted to a t-post means a low round or a high one hits the post and where it goes after that is anyone's guess.

Bullets do amazing stuff after they hit something at an angle. Hit an armor steel plate face on and the bullet will all but vaporize, but a mild steel t-post will only alter its course.
