How long do you want to ignore this user?
A small group of us are headed to the river on Saturday. I'm trying to nail down plans of what we should do as far getting to and from the river. I know we could rent tubes at a place and that would get us a shuttle to and from, but we'd prefer to park ourselves near the water. We'll be in two cars (one couple from Boerne, us from Houston), so I've thought about parking one downstream and parking the other near a launch. It's a been a few years since we've been, and I'm not having a ton of luck finding examples of what others have done.

Easier to bus but I haven't been in years

Sounds like at least one person will be planning on a sober float.

Get there early and pay to park in Prince Solms Park on the Comal...float to the last public takeout point at S. Union Ave. Decent 2-3 hour float and get to do the chute.

Last Friday it was 1.5hrs and on a crowded Saturday it was only 2-2:15hrs

Pullover to the trashboats and people watch for 30 minutes or so.

Correct.

I know bus would probably be easier, but it would be convenient to not have to rely on the shuttle to and from.

Are you the sober driver? If it were me being voted sober driver, I'd tell you to pound sand, and that we were taking the shuttle.

Of course that's just me, and I really like to drink on the river.

I like to drink as well, and my thought is that even if we took the shuttle there wouldn't be THAT much time for one of us to sober up by the time we get dropped at the vehicle.

Please for the love of God don't throw your cans in the river and don't let anyone in your group do it.

And be sure to get out and pee on a tree each time too!

Pee where you will, but Texas rivers are starting to look like trash heaps.

Not to mention the 10 stitches the last time I was there.

Parking & River access are your hurdles both of which you'll likely have to pay for.

As was pointed out above, the Comal has a public park for put in & public exit for take out. For the Guad, you could maybe put in at the Gruene bridge & take out at the park down from the Common St bridge but not exactly the best stretch of river.

The shuttle is actually a convenience & the extra $ is nominal & well worth it...

This can be done at the horseshoe. Paying to rent tubes gets you a free parking spot. Walk down to the water, float the shoe, walk back. Short walk too. And you can float as many times as you want. Yes, designate a driver.

My parents live on the river and two weekends ago we had a lady walk up to us and tell us she would mail us a check of we let her use the bathroom. We told her no but thought it was funny. Your plan requires two sober drivers if you park one at bottom and one at top. Rockin r makes it so easy to park and take shuttle up that we have used them even though we live here.

Where is the best place to park on the downstream end of the Comal float? It looks like it is all permit or Schlitterbahn.

The camping/tube rental places like Mountain Breeze or Gilligan's Island will shuttle you upriver, then you just get out at their site and voila, there's your car.

You told her no? Haha...afterwards did you drive to Austin and laugh at homeless people, maybe go to a hospital and point at dying people?

Or you drop your coolers & tubes off at the put in by the first bridge (before the sheriff starts yelling at you), park one truck at the other bridge (end of the horseshoe), then park one truck up past the school near the landscaping place on 306.

Except get to the river earlier than 2:45 pm if you want to float more than once.

I'm afraid to post this but since it's the OB I can trust the morans likely won't see it. Floating above the lake is so much more family friendly and the water is warm. No trash whatsoever and we like to keep it that way. There are just a few outfits that do shuttle you. You can find some around Kerrville but we go out just a little north of Bergheim which is on 46 between Bulverde and Boerne. There is rental shuttle place right off the farm to market road. Right now about a 3 hour float. It's the most peaceful, clean float in Texas.

We will be out there on Saturday too, we always take a shuttle, it is just much easier that way. There are a ton of places that shuttle, mountain breeze campground is one of my favorites.

It's amazing that one of my old favorite things in the world now sounds so completely unappealing. Getting old I guess.

Float the horseshoe no restrictions and one of the best floats

I'm only 46. Ah crap. you are talking about me. 46 is old isn't it?

I would still enjoy going down the river in that area you're talking about up around 281 and 46. I was talking more about floating the Comal or the Guadalupe down around Gruene....no thanks.

The upper Guad - above Canyon Lake - is more peaceful. Fewer crowds, less development, a little more wild. The only downside to that stretch of river is the lack of elevation drop. The lower Guad has all the fun rapids, runs, and swift water. There are a few fun runs on the upper stretch, but not like the lower Guad.

OP, no shuttle needed, floating-type rivers are circular.

We floated the Comal this morning with Texas Tubes.

Quick and efficient, no hassles. I recommend them.

I like the comal, but it's best if you get there around 11 to beat the crowds. By mid afternoon you're going to spend most of the day playing accidental footsies with drunk men.
