Alright so I'm going to pick up a new kayak within the next week and have narrowed down my choices to either a Feelfree moken 12.5 or a Wilderness Systems commander 120. It'll be used for duck hunting and fishing. Anyone have any experience with either? The only issue I have with the commander 120 is that it doesn't have any scupper holes to drain water.

Do you plan on hunting out of the yak or just using it for transport?

I'd say a bit of both, probably more just transport though as it's easier just to use a marsh seat. Also forgot to add I'll be having a lab with me. ( easier to have him sit outside the kayak once we reach the spot I guess)

Will most likely be either in the marsh or flooded timber as well. The main argument I believe is either sit inside or sit on top kayak.

I have the Pescador sport 12 and use it to get from point A to point B. I typically get out and hunt from the bank. Definitely not recommended for a lab. I've hunted out of it, but it is uncomfortable to shoot out of.

My brother has the Ascend 12. It is much more stable and could definitely support a lab.

Those are the only 2 kayaks I have experience with so not really helping you out.

Where do ya hunt at?

Looks like the 12.5 would be hard to transport a lab. The 12 looks like he'd fit between your legs for a longer ride. Both seem to have good storage. I'm not sure I'd want to be in a sit in with cold water and waders. The 12.5 would be easier to shoot out of I presume. I've got a 10' I've actually hunted out of but it doesn't hide well. Used mostly for transport.

It seems like the 12.5 could fit the dog behind the seat while towing the decoys behind the kayak

Marshes between matagorda and down towards poc. Gonna give flooded timbers a try this year in northeast texas

Towing the decoys? You got a jet sled? I think the drag would be like a drift sock

Yeah I have a jet sled. Also worried about it acting like a drift sock like you said

I have no idea how useful it is, but Diablo makes a duck blind for their yaks. An Amigo is right under 1K. Plus whatever the blind costs

Also if you're planning to buy through austin canoe and kayak, they offer 10% off to people with Texas Kayak fisherman accounts even if you literally just make an account and don't post.

I don't know what those yaks run new, but if you're shopping for one of the fancy $2k kayaks there's a gheenoe for sale that's about that price in Houston. I fish alot of marsh that gets duck hunted with my gheenoe and I don't have any issues getting back to where the hunters have blinds.

Gas, registration, and motor maintenance may be more than you're interested in though.

The Diablo amigo is nice, but being that wide would make it pretty rough paddling. Thanks for the heads up on the TKF discount. I had used it for my lure 11.5 I bought and planned on using it again. I did find ACK had blemished Ride 135's for 889 before TKF discount

Yeah that 135 blem is tempting. I'd be all over it if I didn't think a 135x with the new console like the Tarpon 130x wasn't going to be debuted at iCAST.
Supposedly the Amigo paddles quicker than its width because a lot of it isn't in the water.

I guess it would get pushed around pretty good by the wind then? And I wish I could wait, but I'm no without a kaya and needing one quick to be able to get out and fish

I've read the commander 120 is basically the ultimate with just a different seat

Looks like they're still pretty low, the biggest complaint I've heard about them is tracking. I think they have more of a pontoon style hull so they're not deep drawing and have pretty low walls but have no rocker to track well.

I use a 16 ft poke boat if I can't bring in my mud boat, or big boat, or In use my big boat as the mother ship. They are a bit pricey but work well.

I used a 12 foot sit on top fishing kayak a few times and found it to be lacking in size for carrying all the gear, especially if you plan on bringing the pup.

The 130X looks like a sweet setup. I may have to head by ACK one day and check it out.

the 130x is pretty sweet, you can use the same trolling motor insert that fits all of their yaks with that console in it.

I really hoping that they release the pedal plug in at iCast.

This is the video from when they debuted the trolling motor insert and you can see that someone is pedaling so they had a prototype last year. A Ride 135x with the pedals would be killer.

damn. I hadn't seen the 130x, and wish I hadn't as I was trying to keep the budget under $1k

Jackson brand Kraken sea kayak sit-on-top model is very stable and can go anywhere. I know a guy who takes his small dog on his every time he goes.

Check out the pescador pro, similar features just not as nice (obviously) but the 12 is 829 I think

I have a 14 ft native manta ray and a Diablo amigo. I have taken my 80# chessie in both. The diabo is better for a dog and stable. It works for a river but does not track well in bays. Wind is rough on low profile.

I like my old manta ray but it crowded with a dog. A 12 ft would be a great used sot. It is the better bay boat. TkF website has good used offerings.

Just saw that ACK has a used Predator 13 with rudder for $999

This is what I'd like to buy next. I have a tarpon 100 that I used prior to getting a dog, but no way would I trust my dog to sit still on a SOT and not knock me in the water.

I have 2 Native Ultimates. I really like them. They carry a lot of gear. I am 6'3" and about 250 but can fly fish standing up in the 14.5 so hunting out of it shouldnt be a big deal. The newer ones areeven more adaptable than my 10yr old ones.

I put a trolling motor on my Diablo and just carry a paddle for insurance.

My only concern is that the sit inside kayaks don't have scupper holes like the sit on tops do
